Weekend Getaway- Father/Son-Mother/Daughter

The second year in a row one of my 14 year old sons and I broke free for a weekend getaway. This year along with a buddy and his son we managed the following, Saturday 6am depart Pt. Pleasant NJ for Cleveland, Ohio, arrive at Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 1:30PM, before going in we went to a restaurant recommended by Rachel Ray on one of her shows, I like Rachel, we all hated her choice in restaurants (Hornblowers) which was located right on Lake Erie opposite the Hall of Fame, anyway the food sucked. next was the Rock n Roll HOF, worth a stop but not something I'd drive 7 1/2 hours to see, kinda' like a colorful cemetery with some memories. Anyway, a walk around the area including the Cleveland Browns stadium which is adjacent to the HOF. Onward to Jacobs Field for the Royals vs. Indians with a stop before at the Cooperstown Restaurant across from the stadium for a couple pops and some appy's. The stadium and game were first rate, good grub, great game (6-5 final) and in our motel by 11PM.

Up early Sunday morning and on the road to Pittsburgh, first stop, Pirmanti Brothers Restaurant for one of their famous sandwiches and of course some Iron City brew, if ya' don't drink Iron City in Pittsburgh you shouldn't drink in Pittsburgh at all. Anywaty at 10:30 on a Sunday morning what else can you do?. For those unfamilar with the famous Pirmantiu Brothrs sandy's I'll try and describe. First you choose your sandwich meat and cheese, for me the pastrami and cheese, then they put cole slaw, leetuce, tomato, onion, french fries and a fried egg on it, sounds disgusting but all 4 of us loved em'. I thought it was gonna be one of them mid -west pile eveything on and make believe it tastes good, but it was actually very good and not one the ingredients was overpowering or didn't belong. Rachel shoulda' et there instead.

On to the Cards vs. Pirates game at PNC, but first a tour of Heinz Filed, home of the Steelers and Pitt Panthers. Both stadiums are in a great area, surrounded by rivers and bridges crossing every few blocks, you'd have to see it to appreciate it. The Bucs swamped them 7-0, got to talk to Manny Sanguillen and spent another great day at the ballpark. Left Pittsburgh at 4:00PM, arrived home at 10:00, just a great weekend, maybe too much driving (1067 miles) but not one of us complained and my son just loves that type of trip. Even if your not a baseball fan, the placs were impressive and the people were surprisingly upbeat and enthusiastic even though their teams are out of contention, you would have thought they both won a World Series.

On the other side of the fence, my wife, daughter, other 14 year old son and summer house guest visiting from Austria (18 year old friend of daughters) went to Washington DC, where they visted the museums and sights in DC, Both girls, my wife and son loved it, much walking but interesting stuff to see and beautiful weather. Son #2 doesnt like baseball and declined our trip, his choice. Anyway, we all had a good time and look forward to next years getaway, probably gonna be RFK in Wash DC, Camden Yards in Baltimore and and Citizens in Philly, that should fill a weekend. Even us Yankee fans enjoy other parks and teams.

My dream trip is a saturday baseball game at Wrigley and a Sunday football game at Lambeau, its doable but tickets for the Packers is a tough find unless you don't mind paying a steep premium, I mind paying that kind of dough for a game. The tickets to the Indians and Pirates games were $27 a piece, behind home plate, my kind of idea of reasonable.

Just wondering what other kind of trips has anyone done like this, can't call them family vacations but it was nice to run away for a weekend.

I've been to Jacobs Field and the R&RHOF. I like your desciption of the HOF Saw my Phillies get spanked by the Tribe. Been to Pitts numerous times but never to a game nor did I eat one of those sammiches. Did see that restaurant and sammiches on TVFN before. And I've never drank Iron City Went to both those cities for work. Glad you had a good time.

Haven't made Wrigley yet but I've been to Lambeau 4 times. It's a great place to watch a game. People are TOO nice.
Sat in Curley's Pub (Lambeau Bar) and watched the Packers vs Eagles 4th & 26 game with 300 loyal Packers fans. Them and us (6 firefighters in EAGLES gear). We had a blast. What a great time. We ended up of 3 TV stations out there and in all the local newspapers.
