1dozenraw
What are the differences between this model and the 704s? Are parts around if I needed to rebuild one? Thanks. Zim
Parts for that one are gettn' kinda tuff, you'll have to call a bunch of old tackle shops and do some internet searches. One of the hardest to find parts for that reel is the main gear. 1dozenraw
Thanks Zim... figured if anyone would know, it'd be you. Is there a lot of difference in the size and the way it handles compared to the 704's? "We eat cold eels and think distant thoughts" Jack Johnson. Ditch Jigger
It's the same size as the 704. Might be a little heavier due to the solid steel spool base of the rotor cup.  Spool is the same. In fact, both of my green 704's have 47-700 as the part number on the base of the spool. cbchurch
I believe the handle is different too. I know that none of my 704 or 706 handles fit, I seem to remember them hitting the rotor cup. Â Steve profile pic Penn Squidder, Lami 01166, Atom 40. 1975 or so. spike
The biggest difference is on my 700 the handle is solid metal that screws in if that makes sense. My 700 might be early, I have seen them with 2 part handles like my 704. Both are great reels. Â Spike
Dan J
Spike, I think your 700 is early. I have a collectors guide for open face spinning reels called "The Wright Price Guide for the Reel Man" By Ben Wright. second edition 1999. There is some subject matter on the 700 in this guide so I'll share it by including the first couple of paragraphs. Â " 1961- In April to be exact, Penn Fishing Tackle Mfg. Co. of Philadelphia, PA introduced their first open face spinning reel. Penn's model No.700 was a high quality heavy-duty fresh/saltwater reel. This reel was the first in Penn's now famous series of dark green "SpinFisher" models. Points of interest: Early models of the Penn 700 came with a 1 piece green handle (crank). By early 1962 the handle design was changed to a collapsible aluminum handle design. Thus the first model 700 SpinFisher is scarce and very hard to find." Not sure what other differences there were between the 700 and 701. The 701 is the only odd-numbered "righty" (left hand crank) Spinfisher, and the 702 is the only even numbered "lefty" Spinfisher.  By the way, and for what it's worth, I just saw a 700 on "the" auction site that had the gold Z handle with the soft paddle grip attached to it. Triet
The 700 had 1 spool and the 701 had an extra spool. Or vice versa. I forget. Dan J
More on the Penn 700 by Wright's Guide : Â " With the change in handle design Penn also introduced their model 702. This was a left handed version, right hand retrieve of the 700. Another very interesting part of Penn's history was their model No. designation for these early reels. The model 700 came with 2 spools which were included in their selling price. A company decision was made to make this same reel available with 1 spool probably to cut costs. The confusing thing is that the model No. of the reel remained the same but the boxes were marked model 701 to indicate a model 700 reel complete with 1 spool. Did the company anticipate these would become highly collectible in years to come and do this to confuse collectors? Not really! Note of interest: The early boxes for the first model spinfisher 700 was a two piece cardboard box. This was changed when they changed their handle design. The newer box is a flip top cardboard box with metal reinforced sides. This change was done for easier packaging and stability for shipping purposes. The early boxes are as scarce if not scarcer than the reels themselves."

msbrown253
hi , first we have a bst forum here for buying selling and trading .. offering items for sale or trade outside of that forum is not permitted . also from the bst guidelines : Â I don't know 1dozraw personally, but I'm guessing the fact that he is a member of the 2000 post club makes him a pretty active contributor. And I only see a request for information about a reel that many people are very knowledgeable about, and many others, myself included, would like to know more about. No where is there an indication of a desire to sell, buy or trade.
george6308
701 is a 700 with 1 spool in the box in lieu of 2 sold with the 700. The early 700's had a green painted one piece handle and a cast 43-700 crosswind arm [later ones are stamped brass on both the 700's and 704's]. The rotor cups are differant. The 700 used a 21-700 [the large stainless steel part in back of the rotor cup] to hold in the bearing. It also lacked the rubber rotor brake of the 704's. The 8-700 main gear had a shorter shaft and will not fit the 704's the 1-700 houseing reflected this shorter shaft as the boss on the side was shorter. Parts 30-700, 28-700 and 29-700 are the 700's bail tripping parts and were not used on the 704. The original spool was green and only contained 2 drag washers parts 57-700 (brass washer) and 56-700(leather drag washer). The handles are differant and will not interchange because the later 2 piece 704 handle is at a 90 degree angle and even though they screw into the main gear shaft they will not clear the rotor cup. while the 700's is at a 135 degree angle to accomadate the shorter boss on the main houseing. Parts for the 700 are becoming harder to find. Even parts for the 704 are hard to find as Penn seems not to be making replacement parts. The is a third version of the 704z called the improved 704Z (last 704's made).
