Penn Delmar 285- worth anything

I have the above reel with its original box (has metal corners but box is not in great shape)and the small catalog. Reel is in excellent condition- I only took it out on a boat once. It has the metal spool. How much is this reel worth? Not expecting much but just want to know in case I decide to sell. Thanks!

Excellent condition, original box and papers, probably around $20. Unused maybe a little more.

If the reel's like new, maybe 30-35 bucks.

Thanks for the info- I think it was unused except for the boat ride.

I would hang on to it if I had it. A nice collector piece. They are pretty inexpensive on E-Bay. I would like to have a nice clean one in like new condition. .

I guess the real question here is - how much has the value gone up in the 7 years since this was posted. biggrin.gif

I've been collecting, servicing, and selling Penn conventionals for over 40 yrs. Currently have seven 285 Delmar's still in the box and can tell you they are only worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

Basically, they are quite common and not much more than an entry level general purpose reel. If a collector was desperately seeking a 285M (metal spool) mint in box (MIB), he may pay as much as $30-$35.

The rarer Delmar 286 (which has slightly more line capacity) which Penn made for a short time prior to moving their factory in 1940 sells for $35-$45 MIB. One of my pre WW-II 285's has an original price of $3.75 on the box.

GUYS!!!!!!

Get real about this reel!

The fact is, this is a very good, durable, dependable reel. I have a few Penn reels, and a LOT of art work. The point is: I collect artwork based upon: "Do I like it?"

Penn Reels, especially vintage ones, are really good quality, and are worth owning if you are a fisherman. These reels are extremely dependable and very much worth owning, and using. Anybody who wants to sell theirs' for less than $30, please contact me, I'll buy 'em sight unseen.

See you in 20 years when these are $100 each.
