ceramic tile over Luan?

I just finished prepping my 16' X 16' kitchen for ceramic tile. I installed 3/4 " plywood over the 5/8 underlayment. I then installed 1/4" Luan on top of this and was planning on attaching the ceramic tile to the Luan. Well, I was at work this morning, and a freind told me the your no longer supposed to install ceramic tile over Luan...Since I've broken the bank already, is there any type on thinsset mortar that I can use w/ the Luan? Is there any "cheap" way out out?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOPSSSSS!

That sucks.

Yeah, ya shouldnt put tile over luan, as it's too soft.
Can ya afford another 3/8" height? "Easy" fix is to cover the luan with wonderboard.

I'd pull the luan

BTW, welcome aboard

thanks for the quick reply, not the news I was hoping for...

I can afford the 3/8 height, just not the additional $250 or so topurchase the wonderboard... oh well

Wonderboard should cost half that.

How about some wire lathe?

the Wonderboard was about $8.50 per 3 X 5 board and the Durock board was about $9.50 per 3 X 5 board...not a huge difference in cost.

What is wire lathe?

Definitely go with cenentatious backer board. The products mentioned are fine as is Hardi Backer Board. The hardie product is thinner and a bit more rigid. You install any of the backer boards over a 1/4" notched layer of wet thinset. Screw them down mesh tape and thinset the seams and tile with the thinset. You will have a floor that will last many many years!!
Good luck and have fun with that nice new floor. It'll look great!
