you guys ever fish Wachusett around opening day. i haven't for a couple of years; but i'm thinking of giving it a shot this year. it's usually a good way to pass the time till the stripers show. generally, you've got a chance at 3 - 10lb.(to the high teens) Lakers, 2 - 5lb. landlocks, and nice 'bows. Lakers common.

'Chusett on opening day or thereabouts is a great thing...by far the best single source of information is Wachusett Bait and Tackle in West Boylston...most of the laker are taken on large shiners with lotsa distance and a sliding egg sinker rig...salmon fall to small shiners on top-a slider bobber set-up...I will try to post some pictures of some beauties-we have had some 5-16 lb laker over the years, but be ready to put your time in..Bob at the store can also point you in the right direction to catch the Stillwater spring fishery...we have some major hens comin' up when the thaw starts..

tell him Luke sent ya..

see ya

with sharp hooks and fresh bait
in a crepuscular dawn we breathlessly wait.
some repose in cathedrals and dream about fishin
I just keep smiling and let His hand shape my mission...

i've taken some nice salmon out of the stillwater. that's a nice little creek. ever fish the bar behind the fire station, to the right of the cove/spring brook? when the water's down, you can get to the tip of the bar without being hassled by the rangers for stepping/wading in the water. that spot is as close as you can get to a "sure thing" for nice lakers!

Be careful if you go there opening week. I live 4-5 miles from there and my buddies never miss the opening day. Last year, the Environmental Police were everywhere checking licenses and coolers. I don't know if they were out to make an statement but they made a heck of an impression on my friends. Happy Fishing.

  • 10 years later...

Was at opening day last year and got checked 4 different times by 3 different agencies, they even have the boat out on the lake too. No big deal though most of the rangers are good guys and will actually talk to you and share information on fishing the place.. The key to opening day is get there early wayyy before the sun comes up, claim your spot and you will be fine... had a nice fish fry of lake trout, salmon and rainbow from opening day last year.. biggest thing they're checking for.. license (obviously), no lead weights, and your bait bucket for anything that could be deemed an "invasive species".

LOL - you're right about the EPOs last season. At one point, the same guy approached me three trips in a row and actually got to know me enough so that when he saw me on subsequent trips, he would just start chatting away and not bother checking for the license. This guy was semi heavy set and had red hair (in case he sounds familiar to anyone here)...but I've seen him at various times while fishing both rivers that dump into the res, points near the causeway (this part is not surprising) as well as on the opposite side...For whatever reason, I seem to have a lot more luck in the fall than the spring - not sure if it has to do with me using strictly lures (kastmasters to be exact) or if it truly is more so of a crap shoot at that time of year

Ya since I am new to this forum, I kind of missed the boat on seeing when this post started oh well, getting ready for opening day so why not get it going again.. Shiners on the bottom has been most effective for me for the lakers, I had 3 fish before there was even enough light to see last year. Caught a real nice salmon on a rooster tail and my buddy had a rainbow that was well over 20 inches on a shiner on the bottom. Get there early or you won't get the spot you want...

View PostYa, I learned to float shiners there. If there alive they swim all messed up and if there dead lakers still eat them anyway.

interesting...can anyone show the tips about how to inject air into shiner to float them...cwm15.gifcwm15.gif under scales or in the bodyconfused.gif
