i remember seeing this boat for the first time in the early to mid 80s at the New York City Boat Show, and my little brother and i fell in love with it. we never ended up getting one, but i saw one the other day, and i'm in love again.

have any of you ever owned or fished from one? i may ask the owner if he'd be willing to sell the boat. it's got faded paint, and old engine, and a pretty old trailer, but with a little work and a new engine, it could be a great boat.

the one thing that i'm not crazy about is the seating area, since you have to step over the one small wall thing to stand or sit behind the wheel. other than that, i think that it would be a great boat for the bay behind my house, or even just off the beach on nicer days. i have a three-year-old daughter that wants to go fishing, and i need something that has a bit of depth in the cockpit. the hobie power skiff looks like it would work.

I know the boat.

I have seen some for sale and considered a purchase.

It is a great looking skiff, sheerline and all.

And yes it does have a wacky seat/console.

There is one in my marina on the Shrewsbury that has been sitting in its dry slip for a hell of a long time (2-3 seasons) without use.

I can leave a note for the owner, or ask at the office, if they are interested in selling it.

There was a great article about them in Sportfishing about 10 years ago. Doug Oleander was big on them. I looked real hard for one for a few months, then I realized that it was a really little boat and came to my senses. I suppose that it would be nice if you wanted to run 20 miles out, by yourself, carrying as little gear as possible, every week smile.gif

While you're at it, maybe you can tow me out in my kayak and drop me off. No need to worry about me either, I'll find a way back on my ownwink.gif

there are very few pictures of the hobie power skiffs out there. it seems as if hobie sold the molds to one company (i forget the name), and then wagner boats out of FL started producing them recently under the wagner name.

here's one of the only pictures that i can find online:

Hi. I"™m the owner of a '90 Hobie power skiff located here on Cape Cod Ma. And I used it a lot over the years, 4-6 trips, though only 4-5 miles round trip on average and caught in some weather I"™d rather forget for a boat with only 12 inches freeboard . I got this skiff after having an "™86 20 foot Grady White walk around which I liked a lot, the Hobie I like better only for personal use reasons such as fishing in 2-4 feet of water, low maintenance, far more economical and general ease of use like on and off the trailer. Except for a mushy transom now, just about everything is foam cored and strong. In fact it slid off the trailer backing down a concrete ramp with the result of only a small leak around the drain plug which I drain a couple gallons every couple trips. Mine has the cooler seats as the above picture has which I replaced once so far. I can do about 25 into a 10-15 MPH wind with ease, but remember it"™s a small open boat that can be quite wet. I"™ve picked my days and went quite far from shore, as far as Provincetown (18 miles one way) once. I have a number of requests for it if I ever tire of it.

When I got it I thought it was pricy and asked a friend who had sold them a few years previously about them. His response was that if he wanted a boat that size that"™s the only one he"™d consider for high quality. My only misgiving at the time of purchase was there were no cleats or rod holders included.

Right now there is a 50HP Etech which can push it around 35 with my overweight body on board and it uses about a gallon per trip on average.biggrin.gif

Visch, it sounds like your boat is a great boat. I actually drove by "my" boat this past weekend. It's still sitting there, ready to be worked on and then launched. Maybe once I'm finished working on the yard, doing some stuff to the house that my wife wants, etc., then I'll approach the owner. I also have found a classic Aquasport 170 that looks prime for the picking. I love old center consoles.

Anyway, I've found a couple of more pictures of the Hobie Power Skiffs. Some have a typical cooler seat, but in the one picture you can see the goofy console that a lot of the Power Skiffs came with. You have to step over a bench in order to sit down, and the console itself is more of a semi-circle than a square.

bummer, for some reason the picture of the goofy console that shows the seat will not upload to any image hosting sites, and it's too big to host on SOL.

anyway, here's another picture where you can see the console from the front. this boat is actually for sale (or was in the fall) in NJ. i received an email from the guy that was selling it. it is now a bright green, and has been completely overhauled according to the owner. if anyone is interested in it, PM me, and i'll see if i can find his email address for you.

As much as I totaly "love" mine that step into console would be totaly unacceptable. I have 5 rodholders on mine and can't imagine jumping out of that enclosure each time a fish came tight to get the rod.cwm27.gif
