I too love my 9 foot Tsunami Trophy. Great value. I've also heard good things about Tica rods but I have no first hand experience. As a newbie to this addiction, I was looking for a relatively inexpensive setup that would get me started and keep me "happy" for years to come. I think that I've found this with the Tsunami. For what it's worth, I'm also very happy with my Shimano Spheros reel.

Hate them. Tica's are WAAAAAAAAAY better. I have both in the 9' model, and keep the Tsunami with a 5500SS as a loaner.

Tica's are lighter, better casting, better balanced and just more comfortable to hold and work a lure with. For the same price, definately go with the Tica.

I have the Tsunami 10' and like it a LOT more than either the Tica or Okuma Solaris. Just as strong in the butt section but a softer tip, gives you more range to the plug sizes you can throw.

I have the 10' Trophy and I like it for 2 reasons over the Tica. First, it's longer in the butt section than the Tica...and second, it has a larger collector guide than the Tica. I can use either a 704 or my SS2600 Daiwa with the rod and when I use the 2600 the spools' width is the same diameter as the collector guide and the rod really throws because of it.

Just curious. Have either of you tried the Tica over the similar Tsunami? Or are you just guessing that a longer butt section, larger collector guide and softer tip (I disagree with this one by the way) make it a better casting rod?

I originally bought the Tsunami to replace a Diawa Sealine X. I never really liked the feel of it, and it got lousy distance with a bucktail. Then a buddy bought the Tica, and when I tried it, it performed much better than the Tsunami, so I got one too.

At first I thought it would be a little too light to handle the lures to 3 oz like it's rated to, but it does. I use it on the North Shore of LI and the back bays of the South Shore to throw everything from half ounce rubber shads, to 2 and half ounce pencils. Of course it's just my opinion from my experience, but the Tica handles all of these uses much better than the Tsunami.

I also have the Daiwa 9' Sealine-X, the lure rating (1-5oz) is way over rated and I prefer the Tsunami instead. The Tsunami is not as good with 1/2oz and fails to load properly. The reason I stayed away from Tica's is because I heard that the guides have a tendency to fall out of the frames.

Yes

I think you and I might be comparing apples to oranges though. You're talking about the 9' models and i'm talking about the 10'. The 10' Tica reminds me of a pool cue but I've never tried the 9'.

I have to agree with Dzd about the Diawa Sealine being "mis-rated". It was one of the first surf rods I bought and I now hate the thing. Its 9ft and rated for 1-5oz but it feels like its going to explode when throwing 3oz.

A friend of mine likes the Tsunami's although I havent had a chance to throw one yet. I love my 9ft Tica rated 1-3oz. It will launch a 3oz Hopkins a country mile with the flip of the wrist and doesnt give me the feeling of blowing up. I liked my 9ft so much I bought an 11ft Tica rated to 8oz. So far Im thrilled with this rod as well. Granted you can spend alot more money on a rod but both Ticas are serving me well.

although the course may change sometimes

I was going to buy a Tsunami- but after the 7' model they all come in 2 pcs. I prefer 1 pc rods. I bought a 2nd Tica (8'- 3/4- 3 oz) for a Jetty Stick. My other Tica is a green "Flats Master" 8'6'' -1/2-1 1/2. This rod has a short butt( I have short arms) and I love this for the back waters. I had to replace the tip guide though. *My fault- I use a clear or black bead to stop the snap from contacting the tip in the dark. I'll replace the tip on my new 8' soon with Titanium Ni.

I like them both better than my St Croix Ben Doerr 8'6''(although it is a 2 pc). And I just went out front with my Arra 1083 Lami (first time in a while with that rod) That's my favorite- BUT I will say that for casting 3/4- 1 1/4 p-lugs- that the "Flats Master Tica" (I use the most) is right there when it comes to distance and seems to load better in those wts. **NOTE- above 1 1/2 oz NO CONTEST with the Lami.

They should put a TiNi tip on the Ticas. Great rod for the $ and worth installing a tip.(keep the stock one as a back up)

I own two Tica rods. They cast very well - when they're not broken. I have replaced three ring guides this summer on two diffrent Tica rods. The price to fix: $75.

I am looking for a new 10' rod for jetty fishing. I was looking at the Tsunami, but it's rated only to 6oz.

The 10' Tica is rated to 8oz.

Sometimes will need throw 8oz in a pinch.

I'm not sure the 10' Tica will throw the 8oz it's rated to sling. The two Tica heavers I own are rated to 10oz, but they start to strain with 8oz and a chunk.

Right now I have given up on the cheaper Asian rods and am looking to buy either a Breakaway or Lamiglas factory.

I don't think I'll have the ring guide problems with those rods like I did the Ticas.

In short, if you don't need to throw more than 6oz, I would go with the Tsunami. Or spend a little more and get a good American rod.
