BobV27
Just changed the line on all of my rods. I have either 20lb. or 30lb. mono for 3/4's of the spool and then topped off the last 1/4 with braided line - either Power Pro (40 or 65 lb. test) or Spyder Wire (30 ib. test). I tied the mono to the braided using a uni-uni knot. I also added at the very end of the braided line about 6' of Seaguar 30lb. test flurocarbon line in case I use a lure, I don't want the fish to see the braided line and get spooked. I used a uni-uni knot here too. Question: If I fish in the Long Island sound using a lure, will the fish see the braided line in the water and get spooked??? Sound water is not very clear... Question 2: Will the braided line score into the rod guides and wear them out prematurely? What type of rod guides can stand up to braided line? Sweetwater
1) I have friends who use braid in very clear water without any ill effects. I choose a leader, just to make sure 2) No, not if you are using SiC guides. I do have a wear on the finish of my rod, but my guides are fine. You should have no problem with the linee grooving the guides, unless you are using metal guides. I have become too old to drink bourbon on the rocks. I will still drink it in the parking lot. Rich L
I haven't seen braided line groove alconite or hardaloy guides either.
rrrick
Hardloy or better and you're fine. Very few rods other then Kmart Special's will be damaged by braids.
Zim
If you really fish hard, I've seen Hardloy tips get become from braid, but not often. I started using SiC tips on most of the customs I build weather I use Hardloy guides or not. For an extra couple bucks it's cheap insurance and probably a little better performance. Before Shakespeare bought All Star and destroyed Breakaway rods, every surf rod they built came with a SiC tip. It couldn't hurt. Nick Meyer just re-vamped his website and has updated his rod info. Looks like he switched over to Batson SU blanks for most of his Breakaways, from the specs he has listed. Is he dropping his dealer network and just doing on-line sales now? "…if catching fish is your only objective, you are either new to the game or too narrowly focused on measurable results.” - D. Ditch Jigger
Batsons, until recently, were built by Cascade Composites, who also built that 9' red Sabre I love so much I think All Star built their own Where the Batson/All Star connection lies is, just before Shakespeare swallowed All Star up, their lead builder, Don Mook, went over to Batson. TimS
Interesting Ditch...I believe it was Oznavad that told me some of the Batson line was made by Allstar or made by the same folks that made Allstar? Not all the Batson blanks, but he listed a few that were. This was over a year ago. TimS Show someone how to catch striped bass and they'll be ready to fish anywhere. Ditch Jigger
Maybe they did a few. Batson offers hundreds of blanks. But I'm pretty sure their line of SW blanks was built by Cascade. They're the closest things I've ever found to those original Sabres. I think All Star also did the Patriot line of blanks for Amtack or someone like that.
