Are you sure it ws the Cumberland "river"? I have heard of a lake Cumberland down south were the Hybrids get pretty darn big!! I think it's in Kentucky.

Cumberland River, section from KY to TN where it backs up in Cordell Hull reservior. They do get a few big ones there each year. Lake Cumberland has stripers (pure strain, not Hybrids) as does Cordull Hull.

It seems wherever there is an abundance of trout the bass get huge.

Lake Casitas and Castaic Lake in California have largemouth bass that are 15 to 20lbs - primary forage - rainbow trout.

While there are certainly some big fish caught there, I think the world record stuff is just hype. Have talked to people who have fished there for years. The numbers of large stripers (50# and up) has been dropping over the years. Probably due to angling pressure. Not the easiest place to pull out a large striper either. Plenty of snags and pretty good current.

Bait there consists primarily of skipjack herring (the local guides favorite, 12-16 inch range), Gizzard Shad, and rainbow trout.

There is an over abundance of forage in the Cumberland river besides trout. Big skipjack herring, Threadfin Shad, Gizzard Shad and Alewives are available to the Stripers in mind boggling numbers.
