  1. Last week I went looking for the Silver King…2 days of looking, searching, hunting…whatever…covered a lot of water in the back…nothing…never even saw one. The only salvation was we caught some specks and very short small blue tails in the smaller waterways…overall rather boring to tell you the truth. Upon returning from the trip, I learned of Bill Klein’s passing…the other thread for Bill was evidence of how well liked he was and how he will be sorely missed. So later last week I did my morning ritual and went down to the surf before sunrise to fish… As I was getting ready to toss out a lure, I stopped and of thought of Bill… Looked out over the water for a moment or two, didn’t make the cast, and just turned around and left the beach… Back in the dark ages of the internet, before SOL, there was another site that surf fishing rats visited including Bill…it was a rather riotous time…kind of a rough crowd…anyway that’s where we all met… Then SOL happened some 15 years ago…and in its infancy there was just but a very small handful of us here on the DelMarVa forum that were dedicated, hardcore and serious about surf fishing. Most of us had decades of well-earned experience… At the beginning we had Critter Gitter, Steve Coleman, Doug Philips, Gil, Dave Powell, Possum House (aka Possum) and of course Bill Klein. Trust me when I say most of us were the only ones that seriously fished AI…it was a good time…the stories I could tell would fill a book… But time marches on and things change… Let’s see…Dave Powell and Doug Philips have not been regular here for a very long while…Gil, enough said…Steve Coleman has stopped posting here...Critter Gitter moved to Ohio and now Bill K is gone… To boot the fish catching along our coast has declined, especially the Striped Bass fishing. At the beginning of the new millennium the SB bite was damn good…actually great! Old story that I have told before, but worth repeating; I remember Steve Coleman catching 26 Striped Bass in a single night on AI using bait…all 20# plus if I remember right. I had just moved out of the spot Steve setup in because I had not caught a thing all day…I moved up the beach just a mere 400 yards. When night came I caught only one big Blue (yes some big Blues were around at night back then) and a small SB while Steve just down the beach was bailing them… Too funny! I don’t know…maybe this is a good time for me not only to reflect some about the way it was, but to take a little bit of a breather… Good luck to all… Poppy
  2. Very sad news...an original member here on SOL and the first DelMarVa forum leader if I remember right. Met Bill some 15 years ago...fished w/ him a few times. He expertly tied bottom fishing rigs that were sold in local tackle shops...I still have a few he gave me. Some great memories of Bill; at the DelMarVa SOL get-togethers at IRI...and that very memorable night up in NJ that Jim DE already mentioned... RIP Bill... Poppy
  3. The past few days the surf and other places have come alive a bit w/ the "Blues"...a lot of small Blue Fish and a few Blue Tails...the Blue Tails were rather small...< 18"... Also interesting; there has been a steady swing upwards in water temps despite the overall cooling trend for August...this may be good for a few Silver King fishing trips down south I have coming up ... Last year I saw them.....this year I hope to catch... Poppy
  4. Ben Nall...I looked on the internet for something that looked like that bug...but didn't find anything... Thanks for the info... Poppy
  5. Fishing, actually catching has been spotty of late…got some Sea Trout and didn’t rip the lures out of their mouths this time…biggest was maybe 2.5 pounds and was delicious sautéed … Caught some SB that were very short and also a nice size Flounder… Fished the Blue Moon last night…the old standard Blue Moon…I was convinced that some early big RD were around…only thing biting last night were the misquotes… Bigger critter sharkin’ is a bust this year…I guess water temps never really got warm enough to bring the bigger sharks… The sunrises have been nice though... castnet...get a bigger water craft so you can get to this place...its a ways out and a bit dangerous if you don't know what you are doing...but its one of the greatest surf fishing spots I know of on the Delmarva coast...I think you know where this is... Poppy
  6. This critter was resting on the windshield...picture taken from inside the vehicle... Here's a picture of a Monarch Butterfly sitting on a dune flower... So what is the windshield insect w/ a color pattern similar to a Monarch? Though that perhaps it was in the chrysalis stage before becoming a Monarch Butterfly...but that's not the case... Poppy
  7. Dave...that picture of Mr. Natural brings back memories from a long time ago...what a flash-back ......... Poppy
  8. North American Water Bug...had this one visit me on the beach some years back... The are reported to have a very painful bite... Poppy
  9. Finally some action w/ nice size toothy critters...at night and what I think were Spinners...in the 5' foot range...great sport IMO...a lot of power and speed! Also, if you have never seen "fire in the water" now is the time...recent nights have been very good...haven't seen fire in the water like this in probably 5 years...comes and goes w/ the tides...August and September and some times early October are the best times... Poppy
  10. I get e-mails and PMs from people about how it's hard to read the water...and on the mid-Atlantic coast it is... One of the things I said previously...try to get to the best vantage point possible to read the water...the higher you are above the surf, the better to see... At beach level it would be a bit hard to see this...most fishers would drive right by this... The arrow marks the spot ... Poppy
  11. The weather this summer has been a little unusual—a lot of rain and no prolonged hot spells… Surf water temps had been unusually cool…had a low of 67 degrees last week. A few nights it was chilly enough that I had to wear a sweatshirt over a sweater and shirt. The biting bug situation is also a little strange…some days and nights almost none even w/ a westerly wind…other times though it’s been bad—day or night! Sharkin’ was not happening…I have tried and tried…nothing, not even a knockdown or run… Hand a carpet ray recently that might have tipped the scales at 100#...that ray was extremely difficult to land! Live-lining was also not happening...no small Blue Fish to pin and conditions have not been right anyway. But last week, this happened… Measured 46”… Was this fish lost? I don't think so...I think it was a scout or part of an advanced party ... And for the record I did not land this fish...the person that was fishing w/ me did ... Poppy
