  1. I have a 2016 26' steiger. Same hull. They started calling it the 28' two yrs ago. I love it. I have almost 1300 hours on her now. Drifts great and is a stable platform with the 10' beam. The live well and fish hold are huge. An absolutely great fishing platform. I have been in some terrible sea state conditions and never felt uncomfortable in this boat. I do overnight canyon runs in it. It is a big "little" boat. It is a wet boat when it is snotty, but i call them wiper days:)
  2. Shag, wish I saw this post before the camp. Would have liked to say hello. Yes what a great day it was. Its a little late now but would like to add that you don't need to be a surfer help out. Many people who do not surf help by standing on the beach catching all the kids surfing into the beach. There is also a crafts table for the kids when they are not in the water. Once again another great day with smiles all around. Even a couple tears shed by the parents. Will have to give the heads up again next year. More hands never hurt.
  3. Nothing was done to these a-holes?!? That really burns me up. Before they opened the cut 3 section I stopped to cast a few in a rip just before cut 3 entrance and the police came flying up to me like I was robbing the place. Three, yes 3 officers jump out of the truck and give me the riot act. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE??" to a guy in waders, corkers (i was headed to the inlet) dry top and a 11' rod in hand. Please note this was on a day in pea soup fog and I only passed 3 other vehicles on the ride out. I left with apologies cause I knew I was in the wrong but they do nothing to the guys ON TOP OF THE DUNE!!! I actually saw the trackes last night and shook my head. Now I'm just pi$$ed.
  4. The same way the "fishing only" community is going to........you realize it applies to all people. I was kicked off for fishing by pines. Though I could get some casts in in the fog without being seen. Parks truck with three officers fly up and jump out like I was robbing the place. That shack was great!! It was built by a friend whom surfs and fishes, then added to by so many others. Its hard to imagine how many people have visited that shack....until the county deemed it an unsafe, uncertified structure and destroyed. Although the dune ate most of it by that time! And Johnny is doing fine
  5. Yes this spot has great structure. There is a spot for every lure. I have spoke to the FINS rangers and they tell me there are no boats allowed in the breach. They will take the registration # off the hull and mail a ticket. I have seen them with binoculars checking boats. I keep a vigilant eye out for them and move on as soon as I see them. This is a narrow, fast moving inlet so drifting and running doesn't work. Two runs through and the bait will be scattered. As Brianbm mentions, anchored and casting the structure is best bet. I often use my surf casting rod to be able to work the most area while anchored. And yes, this area changes by the week.
  6. i go there by boat regularly to fish and surf. I can say it has had its moments. It has had many different setups over the last couple years. But I can tell you I have been very disappointed more times than not. Its one of those spots that you see and say "alright, a little more/less swell, more/less tide, longer/shorter period, more east or west in the swell and it will be firing!" And when the conditions seem as though it would be perfect you show up and say "huh, well maybe a little more/less swell, more/less tide, longer/shorter period, more east or west in the swell and it will be firing!"........ over and over again. Also, the outer bar eats up all the swell energy and is un-surfable due to current. If it does make it through then there is a 20 min window where you are not getting ripped out or sucked in by the current. Not even on a long board can you hold position outside that window. That is the most frustrating when you check it weeks on end and when it is finally working, you can't get into position because of the current. The never ending chase for the wave.
  7. just over a year ago and I know, i know, boat fish dont count! released healthy
  8. Was down there yesterday, last of the outgoing and the water was still crystal clear. Bellport bay also has amazing visibility. Going to be strange seeing the bottom while navigating that area! Looks like the inlet has shrunk some. Although there is a deep channel (looks maybe 10ft?), it is very narrow maybe 100ft across. The majority of the inlet is dry sand or shallow flats at low tide and 2-3ft deep at high tide. what a beautiful sight!
  9. Well that hit the nail on the head. Thanks for posting the most direct, condensed, sensible read on this whole subject.
  10. thanks for posting that photo littorally. I am very interested in the next photo of the inlet to see the changes that this last storm and this next storm will bring. Big easterly swell (12-14ft) forecasted for Wednesday and slowly dropping over 3-4 days. I hope the strong northerly winds keep the tides down. Littorally, do you know if there is anyone watching the wash over area by Pattersquash island? It is certainly going to wash over again during this next storm event. Fire island is only 4ft high in a large area there. That last storm leveled it out even more.
  11. I am sorry to say that the last storm we had churned the ocean to an angry 15ft. Although the pattersquash gun club survived sandy, it did not make it through this storm. This was the house that was in line with the inlet that you see in the pictures of the inlet. It is now 200ft from its pilings resting on the bay floor. I am sorry to see the destruction of a house that stood for decades. The inlet seems to be about the same size with alot of sand piled up in from of it ocean sides. To the east of the pavilion past cut one the large wash over area was flowing heavily into the bay. The entire beach has lost more sand and some dunes were washed over again. It sure has been a brutal season.
  12. this is the weekend after sandy at low tide. Pic taken with a zoom lens so the boat in the background is further than it looks. where i am standing is now a 10ft high man made dune where they closed the breach. Also is a shot of a 600+ lbs leather back. It was approx. 8ft from nose to tail. This puts the animal at the "old" end based on size. Sad sight and one of three I saw between demo and moriches inlet. Also what was once burma road looking towards pines.
