  1. Haven't seen one striper this year on the Charles and it hasn't been for the lack of trying. I have called the EPO's on these Armenians that are keeping and using herring as bait almost everyday though.
  2. I have a lot of friends that live in Maine and all I heard about this past election season was question 1 the ban on baiting bears. I saw some astonishing statistics concerning the ban of baiting. One of the statistics I saw was in 5 years the Massachusetts Black Bear population has tripled. It is more evident now since almost every week you here of bears in peoples yards or something else. Conventional hunting methods does not control the population of bears like baiting. Even then only 30% of the hunters in Maine actually harvest a bear. We are going to have a lot more nuisance bears in this state and it is starting to show.
  3. 1 @ 32 is great for anglers that know what they are doing and are some what skilled fisherman but 1 @ 28 provides more recreational money. Its all about the reduction but you have to remember it is all about the mighty buck also. Charter boats are a huge part of the fish kill rates offering three trips a day with up to 4 people that is alot of fish a day to be taken by the countless number of charter boats. The people that hire the charter boats are recreational anglers also. We all pay to play and I believe 28 is satisfactory since I wont even keep a fish over 32 inches.
  4. Justin you catch that Coho at the Ladder Hole on Saturday ? If you were I was a little upstream of you.... nice Coho
  5. I like to fish then I like to sit back and watch people fish and the fish and sit back and watch. The reason why I mostly do this though is two slip discs that require surgery that I dont want to get and a severely pinched sciatic nerve that has cut of feeling to my left quad. I wish I could continue fishing for hours with no break but hour is good to start then a fifteen minute break then 30 minutes break and continue the cycle. So yes I do watch and fish
  6. I agree I use a 7 1/2 foot for casting along the beach. I have no issues with getting distance
  7. Steelhead and Salmon rods are as good as surf rods. A salmon can get up to 40lbs and Steelies can get over 20lbs. When I lived in Washington state we would fish for salmon and steelhead at the mouths of rivers in saltwater and had no issues what so ever. Also bad mouthing Surfland is one of those unwritten rules in my book. Kay is one of the most knowledgeable people around when it comes to striper fishing and Liz is just as knowledgeable. For some one that appears that they are starting out maybe you shouldve taken their advice a little. I for one know that when I talk to Liz or Kay I learn something new all the time.
  8. Dont know where they are but I am pretty distraught by seeing all those fish on a hook at a bait shop though
  9. Its not only the fisherman that are depleting the stocks. You have to look at the seals also. In 2012 there where an estimated 98,000 seals in New England. A seals eats roughly 10% of their body weight a day in fish. So if all 98000 seals weigh 300 lbs (which is an average seal) eats 30 pounds of fish a day. So if 98000 seals eat 30 lbs a day that equals 2,940,000 lbs of fish a day and about 15 million pounds a week. That is a lot of freaking fish !!!! With the seals only predator in waters is the great white shark . With this moratorium in effect on seals the population is going to increase. Fisherman are definitely doing their parts to killing of the fish but without hunting or any type of culling of the seals it is going to get worse. They were smart and culled the sea lions at the Bonneville dam on the Columbia river in Oregon and Washington a couple years ago. Now they are expecting to have the best salmon fishing year in twenty years. They are already seeing the effects off of Plum Island. Plum used to have a huge flounder population about 10 years ago. Now the Seal population has gotten huge there. Now there is hardly anymore flounder in the area.
  10. Good letter but I believe that stricter regulations should be put in place. I believe the eastern seaboard should go to the same regulations that Maine has. One fish bewtween 20-26 or one over fourty. Seeing people holding two fish over 50lbs is getting rather disgusting at this point. What does a person do with 100lbs of fish and then go out the next day and get there picture taken with two more. This is getting absolutly disgusting. Something needs to be done with our striped bass stock before there is nothing to save. My .02
  11. Great Bite going on in Maine right now !!! I might head up there !!!
  12. Not me I was enlisted !!!! I would think great more ensigns that dont know jack ....
  13. Ive been checked three times this year so far at Plum Island by the federal game wardens. He told me this weekend that they have been busting a lot of people keeping shorts on the Parker River and Deer Island on the Merrimack. He also said alot of people are not observing the salt water fishing licence also
  14. I never use any weight with my eels in the canal. I just cast them let them drift and cast again. I find for me atleast that alot of fish come about 30 to 50 feet of the shore at night.
