  1. Hey guys, I need some help. I just bought my first home, a 1930's rowhouse with old windows. The entire house is brick. Now when i was going through and patching up holes for painting, I noticed a mushy wall beneath one window. This window had duct tape all around it, which I figured they had done because of a draft or something. Well, the entire section below the window peeled off, and I discovered a moist windowsill (the part the joins the rough opening in the brick) and a wet wall. It was raining when I did this. There was drywall, cavity, and brick -- no insulation, which is probably the norm with an older home like this (?). What I need to figure out is whether it's leaking brick work, or a leaking window sill. What should I do to assess this problem? If the whole window needs replacement, I'm going to have to wait until I can afford it. I just don't know what I'd be able to do in the meantime to seal it up for the upcoming winter....
  2. That's what I thought (since I just went thought the buying process)! But a lot of the research turns up responses that confused me -- I guess because people in other states have to go through a different process. Almost every house I looked at buying had something added that wasn't permitted, but it was never a deal breaker. Then again that's just me. I just hope the City of Chelsea doesn't come and shut anything down. I really, really feel like Chelsea doesn't keep on top of things, because on that very street its resident permit parking and AFAIK the people who lived there for years parked their cars their without resident stickers.
  3. I don't think it would interfere with any inspection, since it's just vanilla closet space that was removed... BTW, this is Chelsea, MA and nobody pick up EVER when I call the building department.
  4. Hi guys, I just wanted to get some insight from anyone who might have it. I'm having a closet space turned into a bathroom in a house I just bought, and the contractor I hired to do it told me he could pull permits, but that it would take longer to get the job done. I said "go without the permits" because I need to move in by the end of the month, but can't until the work is done since the only other bathroom is taken apart to route the plumbing for the new one. If the contractor does everything up to code (which i trust he does, because he's flipped a few houses and I know he does quality work in general) and as long as we keep the construction discreet, is there anything I'd really have to lose sleep over? I know it needs to be disclosed later when i sell the house. I'd like to hear from anyone who's has worked without permits and their opinion. Thanks!
  5. Hey guys, does anyone here know where I'd be able to find some decorative iron window bars? There's stuff online, but I was hoping to be able to find some place that sells them in the Boston/Greater Boston. Home Depot has basically nothing...
  6. BillZ, that's probably the best way to do it, come to think of it. It was a 35 inch striper... now 35 cubic feet of STANK
  7. So.... made the mistake of putting it a trash bag and out in the apartment building's trash barrels last Friday, and by today they are pretty ripe. I don't know if anyone know's it was me but either way, how can you dispose of fish remains if you CANT bury them or throw them in the marsh like I used to be able to do?
  8. That counts on the "Species Caught" list, in my book!
  9. Only when it interferes with me picking her up from work or leaving her home alone too long alone. Trying to work on the clingyness... But you learn to pick your battles! She did flip last time I brought home a striper. Cleaning it was smelly, dirty business that she couldnt stand, and she eats fish but is opposed to doing the dirty work of killing (its a sin for her) especially such a large fish as I had. She seems to have less of a problem with small fish, but big fish are more sacred (I don't know, I'm not Buddhist!). Either way, I said, try telling that to the EPO baby, and they'll laugh their asses off all the way to prison with you for your bag of a dozen "less sacred" stripers.
  10. My wife only came along with me fishing a few times, and those trips weren't very long and involved nothing more than dry-flies trout. Coming on a trip involving stinky bait and the possibility of fish gutting/chopping.... that'll be the day!
  11. Alrighty, smelt it is, then that makes it the 12th species that I have caught for the first time in this year alone. I'll probably never catch that many new species in a single year again!
  12. It was strange indeed! But I was also picking up some small fish that looked like a small mackerel without the stripes (not silversides or mullet though), not exactly sure what it was. Think it might have been a smelt...
  13. I lose Kastmasters on bottom like a champ , but they do catch fish for sure.
