  1. Agriculture uses 80 percent of the water in California. The 20 percent reduction in residential use called for by Brown is a drop in the bucket. Tomato growers/canners reported a record crop in 2014. Every almond grown takes 1.1 gallon of water to produce - and a lot of almonds are shipped overseas. Thereby exporting water from California. Meanwhile the residential building continues in Elk Grove, and the City of Folsom has approved 20,000 (that is not a typo) new homes south of Highway 50. Metropolitan Water District has offered over market value purchase offers to water rights holders. It is estimated that water rights have been approved for five times the annual average water available in the Delta and legislators are calling for more storage above and below ground. Storage of what? The water doesn't exist. But wait, there's more! They want to control the subsidence in the Central Valley by reducing groundwater pumping, there is only one way to do that - export more water from the Delta. Seems like the average Joe is asked to conserve but big ag keeps planting more acres in almonds and pistachios. I'm pretty sure I know how this will end...
  2. Check out the Popovitch (sp?) siliclones. They hover in the water, have a big profile, and can be made a lot of different ways. You can work any portion of the water column with floating or sinking lines. A little harder to tie than Clousers, but worth the effort. Good luck!
  3. Depends what you want to catch. Most anglers do pretty well from the shore around there.
  4. Is there something wrong with the plugs? Did he say they were made by a particular plug maker? No? Then they are nice copies. Have you heard of caveat emptor? The world is full of fakes, shisters, and con men. Get used to it. If someone can make money selling a high end product, there will be copies. And get this - the copy maker will automate the process and drive down the prices. The demand for the original will be by collectors. It is the American way. Wasn't there a thread the other day about some plug maker that got a lot of comments? Some fanatic claimed they were unique and the best thing since sliced bread. This thread, like the previous one can be classified in the "Who gives a rat's ass," bin. "There's a sucker born every minute." "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."
  5. It is getting to be that time of year. Anybody plan fishing trips around the Grapefruit League Spring Training? My team actually trains in Arizona, but I've always wanted to combine a trip that includes tossing some lead for pompano and catching some preseason baseball. Anybody do that?
  6. Of course global warming is occurring. People that deny it are deliberately ignoring the evidence. Can it be stopped? No. Know why? Because people look out for number 1. That is how it has always been and how it will always be. Will species go extinct, will low lying areas be flooded, will fisheries be permanently changed, will storms and droughts become more intense? Yes. It is simple really, people are lazy and short-sighted; they'd rather keep doing what they are doing rather than be inconvenienced in the slightest fashion. It is human nature, it is unstoppable, and it is real. But there is money to be made in global warming. People throw money at the problem to save a few tons of CO2. It is laughable. Carbon fixing algae, solar, wind. It is all nothing. Unless carbon can be removed from the atmosphere and sequestered nothing will change. I don't know about you guys, but I live above the flood hazard. Don't come knocking on my door when the levee breaks and you change you mind about global warming.
  7. I hope you have gigantic hands! Halibut do look a lot like fluke (flounder). The old joke is, "Know how to tell the difference between a halibut and a flounder?" Answer, "Put your thumb in its mouth." Of course, you'll have to catch a bigger halibut to really appreciate that joke.
  8. It is a nice catch. It probably is a gag, but the way you are holding it, it is impossible to tell. It might also be a black grouper. They look a lot alike. Thing I noticed is the row of condo towers in the background. I remember when there weren't any towers in Destin. You could drive down the highway and see the water for miles. That was as late as the early 90's. Capt. Dave's and The Back Porch were great places to hang out and meet the local bikinis. The original Capt. Dave's was destroyed by a hurricane (Dennis or Ivan) Last time I went to Destin was my last (about three years ago); the place is a freakin' disaster now.
  9. Not uncommon these days. My county has a similar ordinance but it is only enforced when someone complains. Can't have wrecked vehicles, work on vehicles in public view, too many weeds, not enough grass, house is the wrong color, it goes on an on. You may be out of luck if is based on an ordinance. I've had problems storing boats in the past. Now my boat is behind a fence so there can't be complaints. Still, it really sucks for a boat owner to discover this after making the purchase. You may be able to work with the inspector to move the boat back from the street to reduce the "sight of a boat." Of course, I can also understand the need for such ordinances. I've got neighbors that have parked wrecked (totaled) vehicles in front of their house, crap all over the lawn, etc. Those guys can add a lot of blight to the neighborhood, which doesn't help house values. But a boat in good condition that is visible? I don't really see the problem.
  10. Feinstein was working with the water interests located in Smell A and got a lot of bad press about it in the last week. She is a real piece of work. She is something like a million years old, you'd think she would be interested in something other than money at this stage of the old bat's life. Geez, her SF developer husband is already richer than God. Politicians are all so full of crap.
  11. I can't give you any advice on your application. But I've checked out the rods at BPS and they look pretty good for the price. Can't go too far wrong for less than $100 a stick. I'll probably get one or two to augment my ridiculous collection.
  12. I was fishing one day and hooked a pretty good fish. I fought it and landed it in the surf. A short time later a guy walked up and asked what I caught. I told him I didn't catch anything. He said, "I was standing on the cliff and saw you reel in a fish!" "Must have been seaweed," I replied. He walked away shaking his head. The lesson? Even when they see you catch 'em, deny it! I still chuckle about that every now and then.
  13. A lot depends upon whether the trailer has brakes - and if they work. Towing is rarely the problem, as evidenced by the responses above, even relatively small vehicles have high tow ratings. What causes your knuckles to turn white is stopping.
  14. How does any of this make any sense at all? The mathematical expressions are not correct. Any math genius knows the first two expressions are incorrect. This is simply a numeric sequence or progression that includes illogical mathematical expressions. It could be anything, considering the rules of mathematics don't seem to apply.
