  1. Well Since I just got back home from a stay in the hospital and am moving about like Tim Conway's old mans shuffle and MIGHT get to wet a line by late Oct.I've time to kill to spare. Was sitting at my bench awaiting some inspiration when I recalled reading somewhere on the net about a fisherman who was installing rattles in Storm Wildeyes and it occurred to me that perhaps one could Light one up as well. Grabbed 4 or 5 of the 5"ers and my scalpel with a new blade and did some operating. Using a "Lunker Light" which is 1.5inches long and 3/16 dia U can install one on the "Bottom" side that will be partially exposed.Must be really careful not to mess-up the balance but a sharp scalpel and careful cutting will allow a cavity to be made. Then put in a bit of 2min epoxy crush & shake the lite place it in the cavity and hold it shut for about 3 min then carefully dab a little more epoxy around the opening to"smooth it up". Will it catch more fish? Don't have a clue.I figure its kinda like chicken soup for a cold:may not help but can't hurt.Just thought I'd share this with you-all.Good luck and tight lines and put some back so there's a few left when I'm able to fish a little, probably at Kent Narrows.Neil

  3. Leave it to the $ and"nature lovers" to look for some way find a bloody"compromise"that'll"keep all hands happy"! The gentleman was right, leave it alone. All one has to do is look at the islands and beaches from AI"proper" south to Fishermans Island at the mouth of the bay. Those beaches haven't been"saved" by anyone but are still there.Yeah the beaches shift:quite frequently just over a fall or spring N'easter. Let 'em put in a road or put -up fences and in 5 years or so all the islands will look like Miami Beach.Lets put a stop to this crap right now. Neil '
  4. Sergio, truely a superb catch, congrats.,was the lure a Roberts? Sand eels south of the NJ Shore? Before my good health went south I spent many years rock hoppin and sand rattin from the Delaware beaches south to the OBX with the majority spent between RI and the outer islands of Va.'s Eastern Shore. In all those years I don't recall ever seeing a sand eel.Maybe I did and never knew what they were but neither did I ever, to my recollection, hear anyone talking about them as a bait in the surf to be used or imitated. Do sand eels have a range like from the NJ Shore north with just a few"leakers" below that? Are Needlefish plugs supposed to imitate them and or finger mullet? Are the plugs supposed to be floaters, sinkers, neutral bouyant? Normally I wouldn't show my ignorance like this but I trust that I won't catch too much flak. Lastly has anyone fished the Roberts Hammer or the F-14(don't know who makes the F-14 lure). Thanks, Neil
  5. The south jetty is an excellent ebb tide location IF you can get to the right spot.If you're satisfied with just bluefish then the inlet side at the marker beacon will work.If however, you would like to have a shot at trout or stripers then you must do the rock crossing thing.Beyond the beacon tower you'll see that there is a"hole" of substantial size and then a couple of rocks on which one or 2 can stand and fish. This is the THE PLACE.Your lure, probabably a bucktail or jig, wants to be in close enough to be swept to the right and down into the hole thats out there. Its been many years since I've fished that place but I'll guarentee you it ain't changed much as far as the actual structure goes. The way I remember it is that when the lure is in the right position with your line dead in front of you it(the line)will be entering the water about 20 feet to your front. You get a strike you gotta pump like the devil to get the fish"up".Hope this helps and good luck, Neil
  6. Sudsy,Neil here.I would recommend using"factory grade" bearings if your application is fishing and not tournament casting.I've gone so far as to go to the hybrid-ceramics and it simply made my reel too fast to control and more susceptable to sand infusion. If you insist on going to a higher ABEC# then certainlt 5's would be the best compromise even-though many surf casters who CLAIM to be fishermen go to ABEC #7. There are a couple of Web sites with excellent details on"reel-tuning" for better performance. Its entirely likely that a good flush and relube with yellow or maybe red(tournament)rocket fuel will be all you really need. I have Ultra-Mag 2's and 3's with the original bearings in them. These reels have been fished HARD and while some parts have had to be replaced during the last 20 or so years not so the bearings.Hope this helps, good luck.Neil
  7. In the pic that TM posted the top fish has a # of names,Squeteague in the NE States,Del & NJ weakies, weakfish, trout, Md & south Trout, yellowfin, grey, southern spotted weakfish. The lower fish is the Speck,Speckle,Speckled Trout, and in some places Salmon Trout. While both are in the drum family the top fish is more closely related. Both will take lures or bait but the Speck's eyes are set higher in the head and at more of an "up" angle which makes this fish more vulnerable to surface and shallow running floater divers. Around Indian River Florida and in the Tampa Bay area too I think they catch some really big Specks compared to what we catch up this way.A few Specks are caught in Del Bay annually but "accepted"northern limit is at the mouth of the Choptank River on Ches Bay. The shore line from the Little Choptank around to the Choptank can be white hot in late Sept. and into Oct.Usually the last full moon in Oct.,especially if it's towards the end of the month marks the end of Specks in the Md waters of the Ches Bay. Neil
  8. While the fishing ain't all that grand the Narrows are a good place for a Hcapper/Dabler like me to fish.Has anyone fished there in the last 7-10days.What was most productive as far as tides and time of day? Normally i like to fish very early and again in late evening using lures mostly. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks, Neil
  9. Shad Darts to 1/2oz are available at Terminal Tackle. Will have to find those heavier ones also. Shad Darts are KILLERS on stripers, especially if tipped with a bit of blood worm. A really effective set-up with SD's is to put them on a Beetle Spin wire. Where you've got shallow water/grass/points drop them right in the grass and bring 'em out with the spinner blade putting a little V on the surface; Stripers and trout will nail 'em. There's something about that jighead shape/action that trout, stripers and flounder really turn on to. Good Luck. Neil
  10. Hello folks.I'm a handicapped/disabled fisherman whose had enough of not being able to fish due to my condition.I can walk a bit and cast a lot and I'm highly qualified at"back in the old days yarns" so I bought myself a slightly used 2002 Grand Cherokee laredo,4.0 litre, with all the goodies but not Quadra-Trac. Have never driven on a beach in my life and need a bunch of info before I even think about trying it the 1st time.In fact I'm gonna try to find someone to go with a couple of times so I can get some OJT. Anyhow, do the archives have any stuff on beach driving, and if so where?Any books on the subject? I am not in a rush here just want to be ready by the fall with a few beaches under my belt by then. Just don't want to go off 1/2cocked especially in my condition. I'll be driving on beachesin Delaware and Maryland. Thanks gentlemen. Neil
  11. Up until 2 weeks ago Fri I hadn't even been further South than RI,Lewes in over 20 years. Used to live at the 2 back then.Unmarried.Took my son there for his first time,he's 20,Fri PM.Needless to say I was amazed at the changes in the scenery between Lewes and IRI.IRI hasn't really changed much;just more ignorant, thoughtless, discourteous "fishermen". My son watched for a bit, came back to the car;saying"I don't want to fish THAT badly".Tide was racing in and small blues were everywhere as were people. I told him to try early AM and after about 22:00 till dawn especially around the full moon.Guess he'll try that when he has the opportunity. For me the South jetty could be very productive on the ebb tide IF you could get to the right spot.Go out beyond the marker beacon, across the opening and onto those rocks right at the tip.Your bucktail/lure wants to swing around from the left and drop into the hole thats out there right off the"point rock".If the fish are there you'll either catch 'em or lose your lure.If you have a max of 3 guys who know what they're about then 3 can fish but just 1 who doesn't will screw it up for all hands. Maybe this will help someone fishing the SJ.Neil j
  12. Leaving any reel conv or spin in direct sunlight or enclosed as in a trunk will cause damage to the reel if it has plastic/graphite(other than metal)body/end caps IF you use the reel before it has had a chance to cool down to OAT.The problem comes from strain against the non metalic parts when very hot. This can cause backlash and runout problems with the gearing eventually resulting in failure. Thats what a Fin-Nor guy told me back when Fin Nor made only 2 sizes of spinner, for right handers only and they had that funny"scissor" type line"roller"/bail. Also for conventionals the grease and oils in the reel will thin-out and get on your drag and your anti-backlash mechanical casting blocks. Neil
  13. I believe that AJ is correct.I have 12-15 of the same still in their original boxes down at the"home-place" in Md.Bought them at the DAFB BX on sale for about $3-$4 each in the Fall of 76 or 77.Don't know why just did. Neil
  14. Have done a # of them for self, sons, friends and they all love 'em.Used Lami GSH 901MT and GSH 961MT.Extended them with old blank sections.Makes for an awfully fast action for casting but nothing you can't adapt to.I used them cause i got 'em cheap, blems, from Mudhole about 18 months ago.None remaining and lamiglas now just destroys their blems. Lamiglas,Rainshadow, All Star all make a surf blank for light lures with plenty of power. The Steelhead blanks will work though.Neil
  15. Just read where a 13 year old young man caught a new Ches.Bay,Md record striped bass this past Saturday.68.8lbs!!!!!!!!!!!! I expect he had a bit of a tussel with that monster. Not sure about the bait. Was fishing from the bank of the Choptank River at Cambridge,Md.(Eastern shore).Young fella was participating in a tournament.Expect he probably won!!!!!!!! Neil
