  1. Guys, I've had a few deals recently fall through (apparently, people too busy to take my money, I don't get it). All I need is the boat (no need for trailer, motor, etc, but I will still consider taking if price is right). I can pick up. Please let me know year of boat, material (aluminum, plastic), and picture(s) appreciated. I am in south jersey. Thanks! PS: especially looking for Coleman Crawdads, Bass Raiders, Bass Tenders, etc.
  2. Just for clarification, I didn't mean lock up the drag; just lock up the reel, i.e. engage the reel, rather than baitrunner setting/clicker for my casting reels.
  3. even with circle hooks? I'm thinking of trying fishing "locked up" with the circle hooks, which I'm sure most of you are using. (I've always used the clicker/freespool on my Abu's, and Baitrunner setting on my Shimano's)
  4. I believe UVA (the non-sunburn rays) go through clouds and car glass. These are more deeply penetrating rays than UVB (tanning salons use UVA, although they are "leaky"--probably have some UVB). Anyway, UVA has been implicated in melanoma and photoaging. So yes, a sunscreen that blocks UVA is important for driving in your air-conditioned car. And txp patients who have a history of sundamage early in life are some of the toughest people to keep skin-cancer free. I don't know how bad your skin is, but I'll use creams like Aldara, Efudex (5FU), and in some patients, Soriatane (acetretin) to prevent skin cancers in txp patients. Might want to ask your derm. Good luck!
  5. Bonzthings, Sun damage is cumulative. No one cigarette can cause lung cancer, and no one sunburn can give you skin cancer (actually, you never need burn once). If you are getting color ("tanning"), you are getting damage (I should mention I'm a dermatologist). Cancer is a muliti-hit process. The first hits began when you were a child. Finally, when you are 40, 50, or 60 years old (sometimes 30 or younger), your skin finally can't take anymore, and those cells transform (i.e. become cancerous). To see what driving has done to you, compare your left forearm and left temple to your right side. I can just about guarantee you that you're left side is more freckled and rougher than your right side. The left side is where I usually start scraping cancers off of people (while we discuss fishing, of course). Put the sunscreen on every morning, before you leave the house, and forget the forecast (doesn't matter if it's a pouring rain storm--I put sunscreen all over my face, ears, and arms before I leave for work).
  6. Yep, I'm going to do the renting thing first; home ownership + hurricane potential does worry me, though.
  7. Thanks for all the great info guys. What I'd plan to do potentially is rent the place out in the summers, then use the place myself in the fall when the fishing season kicks in a little more.
  8. Thanks for the advice, John, I will put some time in down there. Good luck tomorrow.
  9. Thanks for the replies, guys, you all brought up good points. I was little surprised to hear from my wife that she was concerned with being too secluded. I said, don't worry, it is a beach. I'm sure there are many towns nearby. Personally, I don't need/want to be too close to WalMart. I think we just want to be reasonably near (30 minutes or less) from shopping and restaurants. As far as launching a boat, I have no need. I think I will give Avon a good look. And I guess I really don't need oceanfront (at the cost of not being insurable). I've got a beach buggy. As far as sticker shock, it is all relative. I can't spend a bundle for sure, but we have little lots here in NJ going for 1.2 million, without a house on the lot. You'd be so busy with work trying to pay off that mortgage that you wouldn't have free time to fish. Thanks again all.
  10. Guys, I'd like to look into buying an oceanfront home to enjoy as a vacation home, mainly to surf fish from (of couse!). I could start by asking a realtor, but I thought I'd start with the NC fishermen. Any recommendations as far as what town/beach to begin with? Is the Outer Banks the place to be for a fisherman? I'm looking for some seclusion on the beach (remember, I'm from New Jersey---seclusion doesn't exist). Looking to target drum for the first time in my life. Jersey shore home prices are and have been untouchable for some years (and I wouldn't buy one anyway). Thanks for any guidance!
  11. Okay, Poppy, now I'm getting someone. Was my reel supposed to come with the brakes? Like I said, the box was empty except for the reel, lube, and mounting bracket.
  12. John, I think it comes with the magnets already in there, right? I thought you can modify by taking out some magnets, but maybe I'm wrong; didn't see anything else in the box.
