Fishit 2
Had a hell of a time trying to spin the head, I'm all thumbs...
Bonefish79
I tie the deer hair in clumps rather than spin the hair, that way I can put less hair on the bottom of the head and more on the top, works like a charm. Gilbey
Put a nice big, long shank stainless hook in your vise and practice spinning. It's all about feel and understanding how the hair reacts to thread pressure. I am by no means an expert, but with some practice anyone can spin serviceable deer hair heads . Gilbey
The Mustad 71SS S is a stainless, 1x long , 2x strong hook. Anything similar will work. I do like the 1x long since it leaves more room to form the head and body, but I have tied this pattern on all sorts of hooks. I think like many of who have been around a while I have caught plenty of fish on the old school Mustad 34007's and 34011's. YMMV.Good luck!Alan
gooner
Hello gilbey! can you fish this pattern as a surface diver? strip it to dive just below surface and then stop to come on the surface again!
Gilbey
Hi Gooner. Yes, absolutely. The denser you pack the head, the more buoyant it will be. A slightly lighter hook can also help if that is your desired effect. I find many times the strikes occur on the pause as the fly rises in the water column. Good luck!
