drumfish213
Going to Kill Devil Hills for the first two weeks of August with the family. I am reading the introduction to surf fishing the outer banks thread which is great. Any advice on what types of gear to bring? I will have access to a kayak and paddleboard. If anyone is willing to share if there are any places that are easy to fish that would be great because I would like to bring my father in law out who has no experience and is not so into fishing. Most of my experience is surf fishing in NJ so hopefully the skills will carry over. Also looking for good places to eat, check out, etc. Thanks in advanced. hhager23
Consider making (very easy) or getting a sand flea rake. The fleas should be plentiful that time of year and make great free bait for pompano and flounder. "A land without memories is a people without liberty" - Robert E. jolly mon
Check out Jennette's Pier or Nags Head Pier , better parking a Jennette's and Sam and Omie's restaurant is across the street , Gear - 7' or 8' Med Hv spinner would be a start , From the pier throw Got-gha plugs for Blues or Spanish Mac's , you can bottom fish with a 2 hook rig with shrimp . Surf - same thing , 2 hook rig with shrimp or sand flea's just cast in to the wash .
Porktown
Frank and Frans (which is about 40 miles south of there) had flea rakes from $25. So, would assume TW's might have for similar price. If not, get a $5 little bait net and can easily catch fleas with it. Find a colony and put it down against the sand in the outgoing wash. I think the sound will give you a better chance at bigger fish (puppy drum, speckled trout and flounder). Same gear that you likely fish for flounder in NJ. Popping corks are popular and effective, not sure if you use those in NJ. Various size jig heads and plastics. Gulps and ZMan plastics seem popular there. The Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet would be a good place to take your father in law. Easy to access, and seems to always have something biting. Take those sand fleas and work the pilings, similar to how you may fish for tog/blackfish. Might have some sheepshead, croaker or black drum around. Bluefish, red drum, flounder and speckled trout will sometimes make a showing there. Guys will wade for the trout there, but not sure if your father in law would be up for that. The lighthouse right by there has access to the sound and could probably launch your kayak there. I always see guys fishing from yaks in the Oregon Inlet area. I wouldn't fish the inlet itself from a kayak, but a lot of calmer area around there. Not sure exactly where they launch. Have a good trip
DaBig2na
No need to ride south to Frank and Frans.... TWs in Nags Head has plenty of rakes.. besides Traffic sucks with all you tourists later in the day.. Limit your driving if you can. six more weeks until Labor Day Weekend.... Yipeeeeeeee!!! Keep a check on the water temp.... we had a big drop the last few days... If you hit the piers like Avalon and Jennettes and the water is mostly clear Bluefish early in the morning and just before dark on Gotcha plugs.... We are seeing some sea mullet and spots of the bottom...... an occasional flounder. Jennettes does offer rental rods... Pretty good stuff but suited for bottom fishing and not much else. If the water is clear at the Bonner Bridge.. catch some small crabs on the beach at night along with some sand fleas and hit the cat walk... for some sheepshead. I you have a question on how to rig for them get back with me.....Conditions are always changing. Bring your Yak you can always use it... lots of places to fish it if you want. Great places to Eat.... Sam and Ommies, Jolly Roger, The Rundown (Monday is Fried Chicken night and is Senior Friendly that night too) ,Tale of the Whale, Biscuits and Porn (best breakfast biscuits and fried chicken on the beach) My fav biscuit is "The Around the World", Country Deli.... (best sandwiches on the beach), Art's for great burgers, Yellow Submarine, Pizza and ya gotta try the ripcurls, Momma Kwans (worth the wait). Pigmans BBQ, for Carolina style pork BBQ , Tortugas Lie ain't too bad .. Red Sky Cafe in Duck is a must visit. Coffee , Morning View best coffee on the beach. Duck Donuts (Maple Bacon Donuts are Orgasmic) Please tip your waitstaff Generously! 99.5% of them are doing their very best....
drumfish213
Thanks so much everyone so far!!! I like the sand flea idea. That is actually catching on up here for stripers in the wash (usually a few fleas on a circle hook). How do you work the gotcha plugs? We don't use them much here. NH Paul
Some good stuff already. If you have a kayak try the sound early for specks, maybe puppy drum and small stripers. Launch sites near KDH are at Windglass Circle in Kitty Hawk. One at Dock St., another at Colington Rd. after 2nd bridge both in Kill Devil Hills. Also W Soundside Rd. at Jockeys Ridge State Park, one at W Danube, one at Harvey Soundside Park next to Millers all in Nags Head.

I had a bunch of the gotcha plugs that I sold because we never use them in this area. Looks like I will have to restock at one of the local shops down there. Are the blues in the video the size I should expect to be catching?

Sunday brunch was pretty good too and yes. Duck Donuts best I've had. They are branching out. opened a place in Newark, DE ( others too), which is about a half hour drive from me..... Yeah that size and larger..... up to about 1 1/2 lbs. if you're just catching and releasing ..check with the guys on the end of the pier before releasing ... If bait for them is scarce... You'll make a lot of friends quick! How to rig your plug: get a piece of 30# mono or Flouro if you prefer about 18" long.. Tie direct to your plug with either a clinch or improved clinch knot. Tie the other end to your mainline.. Braid (FG knot) or Mono, Albright knot ... Do not use any sort of swivel or wire ... If you leader gets frayed , re-tie. You're going to lose pugs every now and then.
Porktown
At Emerald Isle last year, a guy was wearing a glove on his rod side hand. I thought "Michael Jackson" when I saw him on Sunday. By Thursday (I fished the pier every morning from dawn until 9AM and plugged, 90% of the time), my rod side hand knew exactly why he was wearing. Why? To protect his casting finger?

Porktown
The inside of the hand. Most people are not used to holding the rod that way. I planned to do it this year if “clear water days”.
