Red Truck Diesel Fly Reel 7/8 review?

9 posts in this topic

Looking at buying a new traditional “click and pawl” drag reel for a steelhead trip. I found this reel on Leland Website.

Anyone tried these, first hand reports I like better than any online reviews.

Thanks,

Mark

They're somewhat similar to a Hardy Marquis Salmon series.  Nice loud clicker.  I have a friend who uses the Leland brand reels - look at them too.  Their clicker sounds very nice.

Beautiful reel, nice to see the old proven technology is still being made.  My go-to for tarpon and bonefish 40 years ago was a Hardy-made Scientific Anglers System 9, click drag, bulletproof, and it works as good today as the day I bought it.

Thanks for the replies.

I just found a Sage 508 NIB that I am going to try. They were made by Hardy I think in the 70's, like the bronze anodized.

Sage didn’t exist in the 70’s.

Hardy did build the 500 series starting in 1984

Hardy was also suppling Orvis and SA

It’s a cast reel vs. machined bar stock of the Red Truck which appears to be a very well made reel, though a little heavy.
