Can someone explain to me how exactly to put this on. I may be over thinking it or I may just be dumb.

Thank you.

My only concern is there is sometimes a problem with a wobble afterwards from the reel being unbalanced so you have to find the right weight to counterbalance the reel. If you do a search on this site for Penn Staal or Penn 700 manual bail conversions you’ll find a ton of info. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Thanks Mojoe. Do I unscrew this part to take the bail out and what does the trip lever look like?

Are you sure the pickup is for the 710/712? Ive never see a kit for them, a 420ss roller will work well as your pickup.

There should be a hole in the line roller that goes over that silver release tab, to keep it open all the time, attached is a pic of my 710 and a 706 both done by Hi-Tide. I can take some close up pics later tonite if you wantCFBE9E55-2498-44BD-91FB-E3A21066A5C8.png.4222b1a9904aa68fc7e3dbe2d974cc44.png842507B7-988F-4B89-9F04-F706A7FC67E2.jpeg.e645c4804552fd7dc0ff5d87ea7d320f.jpeg

Thanks for the pics Surfpat. Would you say this is correct or do you need to see the inside?

Yes, and there should be a nut to counter weigh it on other side

Ok, thanks. I guess I am just confused because I never removed a small pin.

Bfishes333, hope your project is going smoothly. Like I said in my earlier post, don’t forget you can do searches here and find a lot of info on this subject. Let us know how it works out. You can also google Penn 710 for a schematic to help identify parts.

Thanks Mojoe. I ha e been trying some different searches but the kits for the 704 differ from this which was a Mitchell pickup. Most of the older threads on here that I have found are guys talking about cutting the bail and grinding it down but that was over 10 years ago. I will continue the search and try it out. Hopefull I did everything right.

Yes the kit for the 704 is still being produced. From what I gathered, there was at one time a kit being produced for the 710 but was discontinued. Someone realized that the Mitchell 306/406 could be altered and fitted to the 710, and that is the one that you and I both have. I thought about cutting the bail, because I saw a lot of guys went in that direction. But I decided to give this a try first. And yes, many of the threads on this are older, but they still apply. There are many knowledgeable members on this site regarding this subject (to which I do not include myself). It’s a big advantage to you and I that many of these members have already done what we’re looking to do, so it helps us avoid the mistakes they made and that they posted the correct path to take. Keep us posted.
