Hatteras Island Beach (Sort of) Driving Question

9 posts in this topic

Has been 8+ years since we have been down to HI, but I am thinking of going again next June. Since the last time we were down, the beach driving permit stuff has been instituted.

Not really interested in beach driving per se, in fact in the 22+ years we went down, I drove on the beach only twice.

What I DO do though is drive on the sound side in the small areas you can in the Avon/Buxton area....specifically a stretch just south of Canadian Hole.

Was wondering if the permit is required to do that, as spending $50 or whatever it is for the 2-3 times in the two weeks I would be down seems a bit steep.

Thanks

Bummer - since it is a 10 day pass and I am there for two weeks, will have to make the purchase strategically.

Run into the same thing with the fishing license, but at least those are only $10 for 10 days, and I gotta get two.

If it's just south of Canadian Hole, I think you can just park along the road and walk over

Not the particular spot I want to get to, it is too overgrown, and may even have a bog behind it.

There is a similar spot further south to that which has the same situation. That one is just north of where I speck fish where I do park on the side of 12, and I can walk up to that one from there or at least I used to be able to, but not so sure anymore with my limited mobility.)

Speaking of, I don't suppose there is any dispensation of the driving permit fee if you have a handicap placard? Just a thought.

you're probably better off just paying the 50$ and getting the 10 day permit. Your fishing options increase tremendously with the permit. And considering you are driving such a long distance and staying 2 weeks I think it would definitely be worth it.

Likely what I will do.....but not so much for fishing. I go in late June, and 90% of the time I am on the Sound at a particular spot fishing for specks and flounder, or whatever else happens there, but mostly specks. The spot I go for that I can park on 12 and walk to it.

Short of that, I will cast the surf for Spanish and small blues for a bit around sun up and sun down, but that is right in front of whatever cottage we would rent. Every so often will toss out some bait for sea mullet or pompano but not often.

So beach driving to fishing spots isn't a high priority, aside from the fact that the "sand vehicle" is a "real time" AWD Honda HRV, which ain't so reliable in soft beach sand......soundside, the place I go, it would be fine...that spot is for crabbing..........and I do it perhaps 4 times in the 2 weeks.

Thanks for the info and input. :)

If you don’t want to buy a beach driving permit, you can always park at the old lighthouse location and walk over to the jetties and fish. Or drive way down Old Lighthouse rd and walk over to a jetty and fish. It’s always good fishing at the jetties...

I have done both of those in the past. :) (But can't say the relatively few times I have done it produced anything..... :o )

But the permit would not be for beach fishing, it would be strictly for access to one of my favorite crabbing spots on the Sound. The spot I go on the Sound to fish is not driveable to (although MANY years ago it was), short of parking on the side of Route 12 and walking over to it.
