Bad line lay on 711Z - Why?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Well this is my first post after lurking here off and on since about 2001. I have learned a lot and truly appreciate the SOL members. Now, I hope to participate more and maybe even contribute something.

I think the first post must include a joke, so....

A man and his wife go scuba diving in Alaska. He loses track of her, and after an hour of searching calls the Coast Guard. After searching into the night, the Coast guard tells the man to go home. The next day they show up at his house. “We have good news and bad news. The bad news is that we found your wife and she’s deceased. The good news is that she was covered in king crab and we’re going to pull hear again tomorrow”.

I've been using this 711Z since I bought it at Benny's 39 years ago. I went to spool it with Fireline over mono backing. (I had used 30 lb PP but had problems with "wind" knots).  After starting to load the line I noticed that it wasn't reaching the lower part of the spool. The picture explains it best.

Someone here must be familiar with this. What is happening here?  Has this always happened without my noticing? Did something in the reel change?

Handi, Spats,

Many thanks for the replies!

1. The white thrust washer is still in place.

2. You may be right about the bail arm. I only have one of these reels, but comparing to pictures on the internet, it looks like it may have gotten bent at some point. More pictures below.

 1. Would you recommend fashioning an additional washer from a milk jug (as I saw in one of your other posts)?

 2. Should I try to bend the bail cam so it is vertical?

before you go stuffing washers under the spool try to straighten out the roller bracket so it straight in line with the top of the rotor

us a pair of pliers to bend the little arm it rest on so it gets moved up  that would be my fix and if after that it dont level out then go for another washer under the spool

if that makes sense to you

I can send you a new thrust washer. They get flattered out over time.

The center of the line roller designates where the line will go no matter how the bail wire itself is bent. It actually needs to go down. Also if the hole in the bail arm is worn out it will never be right. Check that too.

Wil I agree with Handi's input.  If you do a search on member lion 1044, he was the man on Penn spinfishers.  Stopped at the Bennys at Charlestown last weekend.  They don't stock as much surf items like they did before.  Prolly like you, they were one of my go to stores for the 40+ years I lived in Niantic.  Bet you got that 711 for under $20.00

msrief, Keith, many thanks  for you input. I bent the bail arm (line roller bracket) so it's vertical, and I added a milk jug washer to the thrust washer.

Seems to help but not sure if it's enough.  TBH I probably need to put this on the shelf for now and come back to it over the winter. Meantime, I bought a BG4000 to use in its place until I can revive the 711z.

msrief, you're probably right about the $20. And now the line costs more than that.

BTW, I've mostly had this on a rod that I built myself back then. I guess Hillyers was one of your go-to stores then too. I was 14 years old and went to Hillyers and John (or Matt? the one with the beard) was really nice and set me up with the blank, guides, guide layout. It's not beautiful but I still use it all the time.
