Your Absolute MUST HAVE lure... for SMB !

30 posts in this topic

The LMB thread similarly named has been filled with great choices and ideas.

Let's try it for smallies!

The boys and I did nicely with SMB today in a local river, though all were small.

Everything came on rebel crayfish, trout worms,  and live crayfish.

Nothing on a host of other lures.

Whats you GOTO when fishing new spots in smallmouth rivers?

Usually I'll start with a Strike King Mini-King Spinnerbait.

Then move on to a Rapala Husly Jerk, then finally switch over to a wacky 4" Senko usually a Watermelon/Orange-Red Copper Flake.

Excellent, thanks.

I am looking for good proven 'goto' softbaits that can bridge the gap between hard crankbaits ($6-7 every time a 10 year old snags and loses one) and live bait such as worms and crayfish.

I have zero luck (skill!) with tubes but havent given up yet.

Places I fish, they laugh at lures. Best lure is a fat earthworm.

That &  newly molted crayfish are clearly the top producers at the 3 spots I target smallies.   About the only lure that we've had any luck on is the rebel crayfish.

I have som eof th e lures mentioned.  I plan to give them a more serious workout this weekend.

First : SuperFlukes or 4" Senkos.

Second: 1-3/4" square bill crank baits with circuit board lips

Third: 2-3" ripbaits and Pop_R's

When also else fails: 2-1/2 to 3" tubes or wacky rigged trick worms

If I had to go with one bait it would be jerk baits . I can cover the entire water top to bottom with one .
