I gotta say if that is your leader, it looks like a piece of rope. We all gut hook fish, that comes with the territory, best to rinse them off before the picture.

 

Congrats on you first your first fish on the fly you tied.

Yes the leader is a little thick there. I use 30lb test. First fish (pictured is the second fish) I hooked into was about 15 to 20 lb with the ripping current as its advantage it popped the 30lb leader!  There's no playing the fish on that pier either, you give them any chance to run they'll dive down and tangle your line. Brute force is the only way. But It was such a thrill especially when you see bigger fish came up for your fly! My hands were shaking after the brief 1 minute fight with the first fish I hooked.
