Visiting Virginia - Could use some help.

I know it's not the best location, but its what I have to work with. I am heading down to VIrginia Beach for a few days to visit my son. 2 major obstacles.. We are staying right by the main strip and it will be July 1-3, so the beaches will probably be packed. Am I even able to fish from the beach there? If so, do I need a license and what should I throw? I am not looking to do any crazy night fishing, but would just like to wet a line with my son while we are down there.

Thanks!

Bob

No, sadly, the VA saltwater license is not free like in NY.  You can purchase one online through the VA Dept of Fish and Game.  I don't know much about the fishing down there or I'd give you some guidance.  You may want to check the fishing reports threads for April and May.  Your best bet may be to drive over to Chincoteague National Seashore.  If you walk a bit you might be able to get away from the crowds.  Good luck.

To get away from the crowds you may want to rent a yak from Rudee Inlet Jet Ski and take it into the lake area (go to the right from their dock back towards the Aquarium).  One person $21/hr, two person yak is $26.  Even with a yak you'd need to get there early ... unfortunately they don't open till 9:00 according to their website, but I remember when I was there a couple years ago I got there at 8:30 and they were open.

If you drive from VA Beach to Chincoteague, it will cost you a minimum of $13 each way to cross the CBBT if you stay up there for more than 24 hours. One of the better B&T shops in VA Beach is Oceans East. In the town of Chincoteague, go to Capt. Steve's B&T on Maddox Ave. The owner is actually Tom -- decent guy and knowledgeable but quite the talker. He'll sell you $50 of stuff without your noticing it....
