fishweewee
Ugh. I don't smoke cigarettes, but do enjoy an occasional cigar on the beach. Thread title says it all. http://www.thenewportbuzz.com/newport-city-council-votes-to-ban-smoking-on-beaches-and-cliff-walk/1180
rst3
If you don't like something in this world- fine. But that doesn't give you the right to use baseless arguments to make it illegal. The idea that a whiff of 'secondhand' smoke.. outdoors.. is some sort of cancer risk is so absurd as to be laughable. (on a beach with a rippin seabreeze no less) Some people are just control freaks, and must tailor the world to pacify their own anxiety-based needs. Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. Pistol Pete
Their efforts would be best suited banning new jersey tourists first... then see what few problems are left with and go from there. turkaholic
Ha, can't smoke a butt on the beach here in RI but a big fat joint is OK. Maybe if butt smokers didn't throw the roach on the ground it wouldn't be so nasty.

I think the litter argument rather than the health hazard is the real reason for this.
Kooky
^ I agree the litter may be the bigger issue. I cant say i disagree on that point. I dont understand how the majority of smokers dont see cigerrette butts as litter? People just flick them whereever they want, road, beach, ocean like the world is a giant ash tray ^^ I didnt even notice it didnt get censored, I guess anal is acceptable in SOL.... rst3
Using a beautiful beach.. or a city street.. as your personal ashtray is definitely gross. I think any trash dumped outside a can is gross. But we don't ban eating candy on the beach just because some people wad up the wrapper and tuck it into the sand. I dunno. I hate seeing old butts on the fishing grounds. But I wouldn't pass a law making it illegal to smoke on chucktown breachway. Reason? There will always be a bunch of old butts.... Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. Good point - I've never liked "banning" anything mainly because of the precedent it may create. This is being pushed by the greenies - we have to watch out when they start complaining about balls of tangled fishing line washing ashore.... so why not ban fishing? bdowning
If you enforced a ban on smoking dope, New Jerseyites, and New Yawkers at the Canal, the place would be empty. On second thought, good idea !! -bd Pfantum Pfishah
Kooky
i like the idea of banning at ctown. That means i get more drifts as people have to walk off to smoke. ^^ I didnt even notice it didnt get censored, I guess anal is acceptable in SOL.... DZ
Here’s a little smoking story. I’ve never smoked but my longtime surfcasting partner Zeke Silva (now deceased) was a smoker. Whenever he would land a good bass he would pause and light up a cigarette – (kind of like having a smoke after sex that only a surfcaster could understand). At night even though we may have been 50 yards away from each other I always knew when he was into fish because I’d see the flash of a match or lighter or the red glow the cigarette – but he wouldn’t use a neck light – I’d wander over to his spot and mention, “I know your into fish”, he’d say, “How do you know?”, I’d reply “You smoked two cigarettes in the last 10 minutes”. On Block he’d fish in a lineup of other casters on SW bar with a lit cigarette hanging from his lip, you didn’t want to be downwind of him when the burning embers would fly off the cigarette and into your line as you were plugging or tight to a fish. He always seemed to take delight when I’d yell at him for smoking during a blitz – but boy do I miss him. RIP
big popper
i thought smoking was banned in/on all public locations...except both state run casinos.
woodbuggger21
As a smoker I hate this but I do think that people need to not toss their buys wherever. When I'm driving I toss them in the bed of my truck and every week or so I clean it out. Now it looks like nug will be legalized for 2016 in RI. Depending on how the law is written you still won't be able to smoke joints on the beach. Now smoking out of glass may be a loophole they may not have thought of because there is no litter to deal with
