a fish took a run on me the other day.... .reel made a terrible noise.....took it apart later....4 teeth had lost their edge.

I had the drag locked down pretty good and had also caught a few keepers just before but i was pretty surprised.  I'm assuming it a combination of factors......decent fish..tight drag and just long term wear.

The Mets have shown me more ways to lose than I even knew existed.

I looked at scotts. $16.... but see a few 710s for sale in the bst. So for about $40 get to rationalize a reel purchase.

Any input on why this happened? I was surprised......the part is brass so not as strong as the steel components.

Most people recommend that you replace both gears together. I would take apart the whole reel and service it if you had a failure like that. Those reels are very simple. Replace those gears and it will probably last another 50 years.

Your Penn 710Z is probably 30 years old....I'd say it did fine. ;)

It went out like a warrior too. Had just caught 2 bass in the teens. Had the drag pretty tight cause I was in a tight spot on the shoreline. Had another good one hit & just when I started to crank it ran, the gear stripped. IMO it was more user error than any fault than anything else. Fought the fish for about 30 seconds beforeit came unbottoned

when i swapped the gear (with a gear from one of my father's old penn's) I put the damaged gear into his reel. :)  I will have to remember to replace soon....then i will get a  pic up.

here is the reel 15 minutes before it's incident...

I'm not in the habit of taking many pics while fishing and I also know not to be laying fish on the ground. so please excuse it
