robmedina
I just did this. My story. I bought a jackson big rig last april 2014. This year i decided to put an outboard on it. The NJ DMV states it cost 12 dollars to register your yak. This is true but you need to title it as well. This cost 60 dollars. In order to title it you will need a statement of origin from the manufacturer. My kayak dis not come with one. Had them email it to me. DMV rejected it. They said i need an original. Jackson mailed me one. DMV rejected it and i needed jackson to fax one to the DMV directly. In the end they just used the emailed one cause it was the onky one with jackson logo in color. To prove that i was making things up i showed the girl my receipt from my online purchase. She tacked on 104 dollars in tax. So what i thought was going to cost 12 bucks and take a few hours cost me 176 bucks and took 2 trips to DMV. If a man has no plan for the future, any road will take him there. mccandrj
NJDMV: In order to use New Jersey waterways, all boats more than 12 feet in length must be titled at a Regional Service Center or MVC Agency. The only exceptions are: ship's lifeboat, canoe, kayak, inflatable boat, surfboard, rowing scull, racing shell and tender/dinghy used solely for direct transportation between a vessel and shore. Typically, if you purchase a boat from a New Jersey dealer, it will be titled during the sales process. If a title was not issued at purchase, then you will need to take the following steps. I don't see any reference to motors, but I could be wrong as usual! Compromise is a code word for sub-standard! Jay in the Bay
According to your post boats over 12' with electric motors have to be registered? Once again, the state doesn't make it clear. Of course they don't make it clear... they expect people to not register and bang them with a ticket based on their own interpretation of an unclear statute. HatterasJack
Has anyone registered their yak? I feel sorry for the OP Christie (our Governor) said 'it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission' [as bigblue pointed out as well] never do anything in NJ unless it's absolutely drop dead required "Gradatim Ferociter / Carpe Diem / No Guts, No Glory "I hate taxes, and Communism, and inflation. Yeah, but it doesn't explicitly say that. What is says regarding 12 feet is: "Non-motorized vessels less than 12 feet in length". So even boats under 12 feet with a motor need registration. A motorized yak isn't described by any of those do not have to be registered bullets, therefore it has to be registered. But your right, it's not clear. If I ever put one on my yak, i'd be in the "easier to ask for forgiveness" camp
robmedina
I may be slow but couple things i have learned along the way. Tickets usually cost more than the fee to do it right. This is NJ i dont see the man cutting me slack. Their favorite line is " ignorance is no excuse" On the bright side. Should anything happen to me and the coast guard finds my yak they will be able to know who owned it. If a man has no plan for the future, any road will take him there.
