allen sklar
Spoke to Allison Turner today regarding the Plovers. There are three "nests" with eggs in the osv zone, two at the Levels(km 24) and one at km23. Nothing at tingles at the moment which is good news. Hatch time from today is approximately 2 weeks. Once the eggs hatch the beach will be closed at that nesting point. So it looks like there will be approx 4 miles of beach open even if all nests are successful. Don't shoot the messenger this is actually good news compared to last year. Photo is from today.
Possum
Thanks Allen.Update is much appreciated. Seems like the old "we will see what the chicks do when they hatch....maybe they will go to the Bayside to forage" that we heard for so many years is no longer in play. The prenesting closures that have encouraged the Plovers to nest closer to the Ocean have pretty much guaranteed that the chicks will forage on the beach.A total closure to the water is now being presented as a "done deal" weeks before the chicks even hatch. RichLou
Not to pile on but Phil Allen posted this in the Delmarva reports. Looks like Va is closed as of 2200 on Friday. There's a nest in a cage right at the OSV entrance. http://www.nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/osv.htm (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
castnet
Thanks for keeping us informed Allen. So it should close down right around Memorial Day weekend? And what area of the island is tingles? Edited May 12, 2015 by castnet
Fishhead7
I guess I'll still try AI/VA walk-on, then head to MD and try my luck there too ... at least I'll get to do some beach driving.

allen sklar
Possum it is still possible that the chicks will do the bayside thing, especially at km 24 where there is superior forage on the bayside, less so at km 23.
