Noisy SSV 5500

Great White

Recommended Posts

Purchased an SSV5500 about a year ago and used for one season. Always rinse and dry after use and generally take good care of all my reels. Dusted it off for use this fall and the reel felt almost ceased up. Got it working but now the reel is very noisy. Took off the side plate to see if it was anything obvious but nothing. Greased and put the side plate back on but reel is still not right. I have Penn and other reels that are decades old and feel better than my new SSV. Would still like to use the reel this season but am not feeling very confident in it. Any input on where to go from here would be appreciated.

I appreciate the replies guys.  I'll try tearing down and lubing.  If it doesn't work out I'll just mail a box full of parts to Penn.

Great White,

Sounds like a bearing needs to be cleaned and oiled. If you can't narrow down to which bearing it is, strip the reel and let all the bearings sit overnight in PENN reel oil, then re-assemble.

Hey guys. My reel was making a squeaking sound so I pulled it apart and cleaned and lubed everything. Now it has a grinding feel to it when reeling. I've taken it back apart 4 times to try and troubleshoot without any luck. Does anyone know what may be causing this ?

Thanks -Kurt

Kurt,

You may have damaged a tooth on the gear or pinion when re-assembling, I would recommend sending the reel in for repair.

My SSV5500 had a similar problem last year. The outer pinion bearing was gritty from salt water intrusion. The bearing can be cleaned if you take the shields off. I changed the bearing to a sealed bearing and have not had any issues this year. The gear box has always stayed dry and smooth, so I have not touched it. It looks like Penn could upgrade that bearing and solve most of the bearing issues. I think I asked Penn about this last year. I have not heard if they have considered an update. I hope they get your reel fixed up.

Took the reel apart, cleaned and lubed. Seems ok now. Have been using this season with no problems. Where did you get the sealed bearing? Did it come from Penn?

Penn may have a suitable bearing. I didn't ask.

I used Boca Bearing (part no. SMR689C-2YS NB2), "sealed bearings are specially designed for off-road or excessively dirty operating environments. These bearings are maintenance free and lubed for the life of the bearing. The heavy duty rubber seal provides extra protection against the harshest elements. These bearings have ceramic balls, with stainless steel races. Size:(9x17x5)MM "

Hey Guys:

Still having problems with that SSV5500 so I decided to tear the reel all the way down and found that the outer pinion bearing was ceased up.  I have ordered some sealed bearings from

BOCA as suggested by Paul (Thanks for the help) and ran into one wrinkle.  Reel came apart with no issues except I can't get the pinion shaft/gear out.  Outer bearing and clutch assembly came right out but the inner bearing and pinion gear aren't cooperating.  The inner bearing seems to be fine so I am considering greasing it up and leaving it alone.  I did order all 4 bearings though and would like to replace them all if possible.  Any advice would be appreciated.
