prican1
Need to replace the cog wheel on a Abu 6500C3, the original is black and I can only find them in a clear or white plastic, the snap on kind. Has anybody ever replace one?
ps106a
They replaced your clip on black one with the white version. It works the same, just the white ones aren't as easy to get off. Have you looked at the ball bearing cog wheels? They're a straight swop.

prican1
Been tinkering with this Abu 6500C3, replaced the cog wheel and got a power handle. I put it on a rod, tie a 2oz. bank sinker to give it a couple of cast and I feel that the drag tightens upon mid-cast. I loosen the tension knob to the point where the spool spins just fine but still tightens up in mid cast. Will the Abu Gurus chime in and help me out!! johndtuttle
If it is tightening up mid cast then your main gear must be turning. If your main gear is turning then the reel is not going properly out of gear. Some how your pinion is not moving and staying out of gear. I would pop it open and give it a good lube with a fast oil, particularly on the inside to be sure it is sliding on it's shaft smoothly. Does the handle want to turn during a cast? If the main gear is turning your antireverse could be failing as well. It should never turn in the opposite direction of the handle. If the reel is properly out of gear it will cast the same regardless of drag setting. If the drag is affecting the cast then again the AR is failing. Lotsa possibilities. All recoverable unless your one way clutch (bearing) is shot. Or, its as simple as all of the cast controls nubs being "on" slowing the reel down. bunnymoney
Why did you need to replace the charcoal colored cog wheel? If it lost some teeth did you figure out what caused that to happen? If not, be sure to closely examine the worm and pawl. Trouble here usually is the cause for cog destruction. There are at least 2 different matching sets of cog wheels and spool pinions. A mis-match here can cause some binding. If your problem is here you can change(maybe) the pinion on the spool. If you need to go back to the charcoal colored cog wheel just PM your mailing address and I will send you a good used one for free. lmk Lew BEAVERTON, OR 97006

ps106a
You could go all the way, double bearing, super light.........................
fishhappy
I have never ordered from japan tackle, but I went to its website, and I was impressed by the performance upgrades. A high speed ball bearing model is available. I believe it was around $25.00.

speedwell
Mike's Reel Repair (look under Reel Tuning and Upgrades - Wormshaft Upgrades) sells an idler wheel upgrade - single ball bearing with or without "porting" (holes drilled in it to lighten it) 1117079/1117080. The idler pictured is "ported". Mike's is done in a similar pattern. The charcoal gear , part 21800 I believe, has the same tooth configuration as the older 5152. The teeth are "blunt" or slightly rounded over. So are the teeth on the spool pinion part 19373. The newer spool pinion/idler wheel set 23403/23404 have teeth that are "sharp" and end in a point. The two tooth types do not mix and match well. Puck - Ditch Troll #42 and Mouse #320, the Canadians - Eh! At the Ditch for 50yrs
Kent I
Good info, Speedwell. I have a '72 and an '81 5001c's (bearings in end plates), and would like to add a dual bearing levelwind. Can newer cogs be fitted to the older posts? Incidentally, the interest in drilled cogs was just a knee jerk reaction to cool tech. I can't imagine that a few holes drilled in a small plastic gear has enough effect on angular momentum to make much of a difference.
