Forward balance bucktails.

Recommended Posts

We all know about what buck tail style for what presentation. Forward balance for low angle presentation (surf, wading, casting from a boat in shallow water, etc) and center balance for high angles (boat, deep water, etc). Here's a selection of three forward balance head styles that are popular and effective.

Additional general information below the pictures.

Banana heads are a long time popular buck tail. Their shape allows good use in both moving and still water and helps prevent hangups. They work well on fluke, stripers, weakfish, etc. The picture shows white overall but almost any color or combination is possible, just ask.

Bullet heads are in demand in surf and jetty situations and rightly so. They are a very effective lure when used with pork rind or soft plastic like grub tails or shads. For a lot of guys this is their "go to" lure. No surf bag is complete without a couple. The picture below shows white only but any color or combination is possible. Some popular ones are pink, chartreuse, green and blurple, almost anything. You just have to ask.

Sparkie heads are a great buck tail that's not seen too often in saltwater. They work well for fluke in the surf. A small strip of squid for flavor is always a good idea. Again the picture below shows only white but other colors and combinations are no problem. A few suggestions are in the last picture. This head shape is the basis for the very popular "sea robin" jig that's shown in a different thread.

Here's a few color suggestions for all the jigs in this thread. These are by no means the limit.

General info:

All heads are molded lead. Weights are approximate.

The bullet heads tend to be heavier than advertised because of mold modifications.

Basic color is powder coated and heat cured for durability.

Addition accent colors are air brush applied vinyl and epoxy coated for additional durability.

Hooks are Mustad 2x strength forged and tin plated for heavy duty use in salt water.

Tails are generous quantities of deer tail hair for buoyancy and action.

Wraps are epoxy coated to hold up to toothy critters like bluefish.

These are a great shallow water, light tackle fluke jig. I fish them in the surf and local inlets with great success. They make a good combination with Berkeley Gulp! or a small strip of squid.

Prices:

3/8 oz. = 1.00 ea

5/8 oz. = 1.25 ea

1 oz. = 1.50 ea
