Any good reports?

Two of my brothers decided to close out 2017 with a day on the Gulf of Mexico.  Left the pier at 8:00 and did the 30 mile run to the fishing grounds in 40 degree weather with seas around 3 feet.  Got to the edge and had to anchor in 3-4 foot wave and a pretty stiff breeze out of the north.  Once on the hood, used squid and cigar minnows to catch a limit of Mingo Snappers, four almaco jacks. three scamp grouper, a few porgies, banded rudder fish, a couple of sharks, and one Lion fish.  The seas settled down and we were back at the pier around 3:00.  Great way to end the year.

Hope you all have a great New Year

Steve

Had some time yesterday so I hoped around to a few spots during the day.  Just off shore there were draggers everywhere, every place i stopped they were some not to far offshore.  Also there was a shot-ton of weeds and crap in the water, which with the SW wind could be from anything but i was thinking from the draggers.  What they hell are they targeting, seems early for squid? Because i would think they would be pulling in lots of micros?  Saw lots of people looking for fish but saw very few caught, of course i did not go out to the famed early spring wall.  Beaches were packed like it was a mid summer day, but looked more like spring break.

Funny thing, among the rats, I caught 2 shad...yep full grown american shad in the 16 inch range...on a bucktail...out front, not in a river.

I don't know how, being as I grew up fishing the CT river spring run, and RI, but ive never caught a shad.

would have to be by accident, as ive never specifically targeted them,  but still.

Usually early fall I get them accidentally.  They like teasers and small bucktials/rubber.
