Normally wouldn't spam like this.

But every year the weekend before Thanksgiving Capt. Steves Bait and Tackle on Chincoteague holds a surf fishing tournament.  It is free and the prize is a nice rod and reel set from the shop.  But last year there was no tournament because of Hurricane Sandy.  So they lost all of their late Oct., Nov. and Dec fisherman since AI wasn't open.   Then this year the government shutdown closed AI during some of the best fair weather fisherman time of the year and again they lose 3 weeks of income.  Most people think that these shops on the shore make their money in the summer.  But the truth is the summer pays the bills and the fall season is their profit.

Tom runs the shop with his two sons and some locals.  But he is even laying off at least one of his sons this winter.  These are great people who know fishing and love the surf and fishing.  I will be there on Nov 21 to fish the tournament and will buy a rod I probably don't need and the regular bait and tackle.  If you have the time and want to experience some of the late year fishing that is Chincoteague, please consider attending.

Ditto that. I was just out that way last weekend to try my hand at the puppy drum and while there loaded up on rigs , before that I was there for the full moon at the end of Sept and did same. They're good people and I always make it a point to drop in and get the latest news along with bait, ice etc.I hope to get out that way at least once or twice more in Nov Dec before the years thru.

I can't make it down for the tourney this year due to a neck surgery pending, but I also want to comment on how great people these guys really are. Jimmy makes you feel like family and my little boy loves his daughter lol. I must say that since discovering AI I use this shop exclusively.

This is my favorite B&T store. Tom, Jimmy and Pete are great to deal with and I always look forward to seeing them. They are all extremely helpful and will go out of their way to assist you. Haven't been down this year so far but hopefully will in the next 10 days or so

.....they are the best! Good people and a good shop. I used to fish their striper surf tournament with two friends, one from NC and the other from PA. Sadly, they have both passed away recently and fishing without them will not be the same. Good luck to all, especially to Tom and his family.

Sounds like fun. Here are a few questions...

Is it a one day event? And how do you register? Day of, or in advance? Anyone have the address or number for the shop?

Stupid questions perhaps, but they seem to change the rules on stuff like this every day now. Is the ORV pass purchased in Maryland still valid for the Chincoteague side? And is the Coastal/Bay/Sport fishing licence purchased in Maryland still valid in Maryland and Virginia waters? Or would I need another fishing license to fish the Chincoteague surf?

MD pass will get you on the beach on the VA side, but you need to fill out a form (free) to fish at night. You need to go online to get a VA FIP number if you already have an MD fishing license, no need to get a VA license.

Google this:

The shop is also a fun place to visit especally with kids...

Introduce yourself to Tom, he is one of the very few people I have ever met that never forgets your name!

Good luck in the tournament.

Tom, Jimmy, and Pete are great folks. I was on my way down Friday evening hoping to get an early start Saturday morning. I spoke to Jimmy via his cell and he came back in to open the shop at 930pm so I would have bait for early Saturday. That's the kind of folks they are!
Whenever I go down, they always tell me what is going on...even where to go on the beach for the best chance of catch'n. Often they are right...which sucks when I have tried another part of the beach which did not produce...hehe.
Not to mention, the fish'n stories and great conversation around cocktails in the evenings makes you feel like extended family!
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the Tourney...but suggest to all available...give it a try.

25.5" Puppy I got Saturday...again should have listened to Jimmy and tried the walk-on. Many who did got thier limit of 3!Posted Image
