Whatever the circumstances were behind this incedent, this could cause a series of investigations about all train track crossings in the Cape area.

If that crossing did not have gates & lights, then it will soon. But I wonder what will happen with the train company and thier decisions to upgrade all crossings, or fence off areas.

Subsequent news reports from an eyewitness say the train blasted its horn a number of times as it approached the crossing and that the crossing lights were flashing.

The eyewitness stated she was surprised to see the truck proceed across the tracks under those conditions.

On the surface it appears to me to be the fault of the truck driver, but unintended consequences often come into play and this may go in a direction that affects us all. :(

Hate to say it, but all it's going to take is one fatality or serious injury due to a train hitting someone crossing the tracks, and that will be the reactionary tipping point for the fences going up in high foot traffic areas (like the Canal), no matter what the cost. It's pretty remarkable that it hasn't happened already. :squid:

I don't see why they do not just put in the dropping gates and flashing lights at all of the grade crossings anyhow. Wouldn't that avoid most of the "concern?" People have been living with RR crossings in highly populated areas for about 200 years now or so right?

Heck kids love that junk! It would be an added attraction for people sitting in traffic along sandwich road or 6A.

Or... do we not have flashing lights and bells because it wouldn't fit the "local charm" of the towns of Hyannis, Bourne and Sandwich?

More paranoia................... The government can't fence our borders so how is a marginal R.R. going to fence a section of track ???????????

stop and think, how many accidents involving trains and people or trains and vehicles happen in the US daily ????? I would beleive very very few..............

Bernie, the difference is you are using logic. Call it paranoid, but I have no confidence that the RR, espec. when govt pressure becomes too great, will act in anything other than a knee-jerk, irrational way. Hey I hope ur right !

Those gates costs a lot of money and everybody wants somebody else to pay for it. The FRA has standards based on the amount of traffic that the road has that determines the type of crossing protection needed. some people also complain about the sound being a problem for neighbors. But honestly, there is half a million tons of metal going by, pulled by a 3000 horsepower diesel engine, its going to make a lot of noise regardless of bells and whistles.
