A buddy of mine was telling me that the new Ryobi Metaroyal Safari 5000 was a fantastic reel.  He basically said west coast guys are using them vs. the east coast guys who stick with Van Staal's.

Anyone use one of these and any feedback?

I used to use a Metaroyal 5000A, which is not a Japan made model. Use it as a boat reel, good for bottom dwelling but not for jigging due to enormous back play on jerk. Nice spool design (pre-set drag) as found on Accurate TS but not as smooth as TS. Line capacity is 275M of pe5 Varivas Avani 10X10. After all its a nice reel as it caught several 20lb cobia easily.

How do you think it would hold up to the surf?

I never surf with it, a ding on spool on one boat ride manage to get it corrode. Seal-wise (body & spool drag) i would say is better than trusty good'Ol 704/706.

Some years ago, I ran acroos two tables full of Ryobi spinning reels at a flea market.
The guy running the tables told me he got them very cheap from the Ryobi repair dept.
Seems Ryobi decided to get out of the fishing business, and if you had a reel in for repair, well you were just out of luck.

Ever since then, I have shunned Ryobi power tools.
Now that I hear they are back in the FISHING business .....
I will tell this story every single time I hear the word "Ryobi"

There is no truth to the rumor that "Ryobi" means "untrustworthy" in Japanese.
Ryobi was an actress in the "X-Files" ....

Not sure of the exact story but I think the fishing side of ryobi folded and was bought up by the jarvis walker group. The tools business has nothing to do with the fishing side of things.

The metaroyal is held in pretty high regard here in Australia for boat work but cant say I have heard of too many using it on the beach. It is proven old ryobi gear that had the wrinkles worked out of them long ago like the applause.

I still have two 15 year old Penn Prions that were made by Riobi. They are only 3000 series but still going....
