Ugh. The term is Outlaw Club. A 1%er is something completely different.

I'm not an expert, but I think the 1% thing comes from the fact that affiliate MCs are expected to kick 1% of their, uh, revenues up to the Angels. Not every MC has the right to sport the 1% patch.

Nope. 1% is because some magazine said 99% of the motorcycle riders were law abiding citizens. The 1% are the ones that are proud to be outlaws. I learned that on Gangland.

Here's what I heard:

 

In the 1960s, at a meeting ot the American Motorcyclists Association, an AMA spokesman was railing against outlaw motorcycle gangs and he said something to this effect: "99% of motorcyclists are fine people, it's the 1% that give motorcycling a bad name."

 

A 1%ER patch means the wearer is in the group of outlaw motorcyclists who comprise 1% of motorcyclists.
