Baby carrots?

I don't shop, but sometimes my wife buys these baby carrots.
They look just like grownup carrots only smaller, and they don't seem as pointy.
I suspect they cost more because they are plucked in infancy, and they do seem a bit sweeter.
Are they more expensive?
Should I sit her down and try to reel her in from such extravagance?
Or, should I just let it go?

best i can figure each one is widdled down from a larger carrot, hence the price discprecpency. they must aim for the flavor center of the carrot. those little orange snausages are good snappy snacktime fun. try the robustos

Oh, so they're not really babies, just hacked up adults?

I bet they save the shavings for cole slaw and creative plating.

Snappy indeed, king of the veggie platter , imho.

otter figures right.
The baby carrots are bred for length and no taper - not taste. Best tasting carrots are the ones w the tops on. Peel and cut yourself.

well billybob my cookin word is by no means lock-the-thread definitive, but you ever meet a carrot with no skin? cause those little fellers dont need peelin last time i checked and i agree, they dont play 2nd fiddle to raw broccoli in the grand platter

I don't know what Pauls' talking about these carrot tops?

Is he referring to the scab?

Battin second on the platter lineup has to be cherry tomaters, I just pop & chomp, goopy seedy explosions of flavor.

BB - some are real babies, some are shaved down, broken rejects.
The little ones are usually the real deal. The stubbie ones are blems.

cherries are great but they go fast like the pepper slices. i never get a shot at em and im left staring at the celery again. good fiber in the celery, but next to no nutrition. yup. i just learned that. i was very let down.

The carrots are harvested and shipped w their tops. They must be shipped and sold quickly which preserves the eating qualities. For most of the year they come from CA which are the best tasting carrots available. Bag carrots or baby carrots can lay in storage for weeks or months prior to shipment.

No the carrots are grown specifically to mill into babies. Using broken rejects is inefficient and a quality control nightmare.

I saw bunches of carrots the other day that appeared to be stunted...shaped like mini potatoes...pretty cool, but i passed.

How baby carrots are made.........



Steve goes out in the garden in Mid to Late July and pulls some of the ones that he sowed in Mid April to thin out the main crop......and they even have the tops still...........

my dog poops for them, grabs it just like a bone, scampers off. he'll growl if you try to take it. loves the broc too. he's a good puppeh.
