I am headed to Cancun May 24th for a week with my girlfriends family. I will be bringing my Ron Arra and VS200 combo in hopes that I will find somewhere to surf fish from the beach. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could fish, what I should bring, etc????

Are there Roosterfish near Cancun??

Thanks,
Ryan

Check this thread for a fair warning on Ciguatera poisoning:

Search for it on google to. Bad stuff.

Here is a thread on the fishing:

Good luck!

Ryan, No roosters in cancun, snook, tarpon, baracuda. I'm heading down there next thursday for a week. I'll give u a full report. I've done very well from the beach in the past few year, the beach had tons of structure from the beach erosion due to the hurricane in '05. This past winter, the Gov't of Mexico repaired the beaches, from what i hear they are flat like before the hurricane. Here is the link to last years report. http://www.striperso....ghlight=cancun

I'm taking down all sorts of tackle, not sure what work last year will work this year. I'll let you know.

Ryan, I was there about a month ago. Beaches were very flat. There seemed to be a sand bar about 75 feet from shore with a deeper area between the beach and the bar. Spoke with the life guards and they thought there might be some Snook or Jacks around. They also said that the beaches were in a protected reef area and fishing was not allowed????
The wind was high and all week long and I did not see anyone fishing. Not even up at the bridge everyone talks about. I only had an 8 wt flyrod and a 6ft 6 spinning rod, completely useless with the wind. This was my first time there and I really did not know much about the area or any other place to fish. Hopefully this does not turn you off on trying as I am sure others on this site can guide you to more positive advice.

Hey Guys i'm an avid surf fisher and I'll be in cancun april 30-may4. I'm reading these posts (and some others) and i can't wait to try my hand. I'll probably bring two setups. 7'6" diawa dwave combo and an ultralight shakes for the lagoon. I like the idea of spoons or bright rapalas for that clear water. I've also heard that i should throw metal leaders. what else am I missing? this is my first cancun fishing experience.

Willy, where are you staying, i'll be down there also. Here is a link to something I put together for a youngster that went down in January. I'm thinking with the beach being so flat this year, i'm bringing a bunch of Fin-s and Bass Assains, with all the other crap i'm brining!!.. check out the link.

There's a light tackle outfit that fishes the mangroves. I think it's something like cancun tarpon adventures. If you want to spend $$ and not bring all the gear....

Bring some soft plastics though, I wish I had some sluggos/flukes/etc.
