It seems most people prefer a slower action rod in the surf, it makes working a pencil popper easier but i find a slow action rod can also take away from other aspects of plugging such as maintaining sensitivity with smaller or lighter presentations. I my self have always preferred faster actions especially when bucktailing, what are your opinions?

For different things I have all different rods. I think slow rods are great for throwing some nice hefty timber out there. When throwing light stuff like plastics(redfins, bombers, etc) I like little whips, as a DECENT striper rod is pretty hard to load with a light little plastic. When throwing metals, I like medium fast, as they load even a fast rod pretty easily, and fly out their like little rocket-ships no matter what you do. Bait I really couldn't care less off the surf. Live bait, I want a rod JUST heavy enough to go after the fish I am trying to catch.

I don't know of course, but I would think that a lot of people do a mix and match. If we didn't mix and match, we wouldn't be able to have 32 rods and reels.

it depends what you like.......

i know guys that love a fast action rod for pencils, i myself prefer a more moderate action.. both work fine just preference.

same goes for bunker chunking, i know really good fishermen that only fish moderate to slow action rods and i know guys that only use fast action. again preference.

for my money the st croix mojos and legends cover all spectrums of my preference. some mojos are a little more moderate for when i throw pencils, legends are a little faster for bucktailing and such.

so you have to get out there and test a few rods and see what suits you best.

ARAT makes a very good point but I am going to have to go with Chief2's 32 rod/reel configuration

Say you are throwing 4-5 oz from the surf with 12ft surf rods and low riders.

What gives you more distance, slow or fast action surf rods?

I guess it's personal preference.
I like a fast action rod for just about everything I do.
Except for live baiting.
For heavers when chunking, I've learned that I cast better with a fast action, stiff tip.
For jigging, Mirrolures, Got-cha plugs - just about any small lure - I feel I have have better control with a fast tip (especially when used with braid).
I don't throw many big plugs (whatever ya'll Yankees call poppers, needlefish, ect.) so I can't say which is better for that.

Since I grew up with all slow action rods - I like them for certain situations. I just bought an E glass to try throwing platics like pink zooms.
The old fiberglass rods from the past were heavy. I did like (or was used to) the way they loaded for a cast. I tried a few casts in Fla. on someones Ugly Stick- I found that for casting shrimp-I had fewer bait losses on the cast. I could also do softer but accurate casts than with my graphite rods. Might be because I don't fish bait much anymore.
Not surf-but--- in open freshwater I cast really accurately with fast tips. Around trees etc- from memory-I was more accurate with my slow rods casting under and between branches. Might be that was all I had to work with then.
I would like to try a surf rod w slow action for pencils.

Since moderate wasn't a choice a chose slow action on the Poll - Mod to low action with braid is perfect - not E glass slow, but S-glass slow

Low riders work better with fast action rods.I have tried slow and fast action rods and i always get much better distance with the faster action rods.

I prefer fast/ moderate action for lures and buckys and such. All Star 1266,1267, Seeker 1008, CSJ100, Amtak 1087 or 88 and rods like that. heavy lures fast action All Star 1209, 1210, 1089

Pencil Popping a slow/moderate action with shut off power is what I like. Seeker Baby Ulua, Lami S-glass though the S-glass bends a bit to much and doesn't have a ton of power (fish fighting).

Bait up to 10oz I like all glass mostly rods like Seeker 10' Ulua with Extention. or a Lami S-glass 136 cut to 10'8" to handle large baits or Lami E-glass 1205M. All Star 1508,1509 which are graphite and fast/mod action.

It's funny looking at the poll results that many prefer the fast action rods since so many like Lamiglas GSB/XS series which are not fast action!!
