Reports on the Helen H?

I hear that they mainly jig for the cod, and I've never jigged for cod before. I have a 9' moderate action loomis mooching rod rated for 1-6 oz, as well as my 7'6" JAWS custom acid wrapped rods (9-14 ounces, 40lb+ dead lift). Which one do you think would be better? The loomis is a lot lighter than my jigging rod. What kind of jigs should I bring? Thanks in advance to all you sharpies for taking the time to toss some knowledge to this noob

Thanks for the report, codfish. What kind of jigs were you using? Did the whole boat limit out on their 10 cod each? I want to bring my friend along (she's just gotten into fishing), and am wondering if she can get away with using a lighter jig + 30lb spiderwire or 20lb powerpro. Codfish don't fight too hard, so I'm hoping she can still manage with some light gear that doesn't tire her out.

I took a lady friend out on the H last year. She has a problem with iorn defficency. So all the cranking of the handle was not going to happen. So she picked up an electric reel. She was able to keep up with the rest of us. At the end she had a cooler full and was very happy. The next morning she was very happy but sore. She watched me battle a porbeagle to the boat but we last it.

That sounds sweet, but my lady friend is kinda new to fishing (first time she's fished was last weekend for blackfish), and I'll be providing all the tackle. Can't justify shelling out $400 for a powered reel that I'd probably never use myself.
I'm still wondering what shapes and sizes of jigs I should use to squid with, and if there's any other techniques that will let my lady friend use even lighter jigs.
