Outboard prop shaft seal replacement

There seems to be oil leaking at the prop shaft on my outboard. Is it a difficult job to replace them? Are they all accessed from the outside (behind the prop) or do I need to remove the guts and go in from the top to get the inner seal?
I checked an online schematic and it looks fairly easy.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

its a 2004 15 hp mercury 2 stroke. It looks easy to replace the seals and o ring. I'm not sure how to get the old seals out.

Make sure it is a leak, and not exhaust 'oil' buildup.



Better yet, what color is the Oil?

You may want to be careful with the prop shaft seal, they may look easy but they can be very tricky. Getting things lined up and spaced propperly may prove challenging.

DAQ, you may be correct, and I don't want to get in over my head seeing as I don't have any "special" tools such as pullers or slide hammers.
Anyone know a ballpark figure of what a dealer would charge?

If 'Black' it's Exhaust. Residual unburnt Oil mixes with Carbon from the Exhaust and slowly drips out.

Okay, I'll run it some more and check it carefully for a leak. This outboard is recently acquired and perhaps I'm just not used to seeing so much oil in the exhaust. It burns a 50:1 mix and my previous outboards ran 100:1

Just compare it to the oil in the case.
You might as well do an oil change anyway.

The the exhaust and drive oils will smell different, so give'em a sniff before you dive into changing seals.

When you drain the lower end fluid, it should be a greenish blue or grayish blue color. If it has a "milky" look, then it is leaking and seals need replacing. Based on your description, the seal is probably OK and you are looking at exhaust residue.

Thanks for your input guys. I finally found the time to check it out more thoroughly and it was from the exhaust. I was just very surprised to see so much oil coming out of the exhaust. The outboard is new to me and the pervious owner must have never pulled the prop and wiped off the prop shaft or the area around the seals. It was just loaded. I also think that I am used to seeing the exhaust from a 100:1 mix and this outboard burns 50:1 so there is more unburned oil. Thanks again for your help.
