They are some cheap China made stuff! I wouldn't worry about using braid on them. The thing is if it does groove the guides it'll be cheaper to buy another Ugly Stik!If they are the old USA made Shakys with the shock ring type guides they might be Fuji...

not sure about the guides, but all or at least most of ugly stick rods are made in USA in Columbia, SC

Hey Bluefish, They haven't made Ugly stiks here since `04 they were sent off shore. Both Shakephere and All Star were bought out and sent packing with their tails between their legs!! Eggroll anyone??

16 years old.. They are USA! Most likely Fuji might be Pacbays. Fish them and if they groove have them rewrapped. They might be heavy and old school but you won't ever get another USA made Shaky... not new anyhow!!

They used to put stickers on the butts that say Made in China. The Shakespeare decal with the info will say made in USA or Newberry,South Carolina USA

I have an old one. Used braid on it for a while with no issues. Only the Largest guide has Fuji stamped on the bottom foot where it attaches to the rod.
