Freezing Bass - How long?

How long can I keep em in my freezer. I have a filet I wrapped in plastic wrap then into a freezer bag from late Sept.

The fresh fish/look em in the face thread reminded me about this.

i just thawed out and cooked tuna from june... it was delicious. if there's any meat that's browish or off colored, just trim it off. generally after freezing fish i'll always cut an eighth inch off the whole outside of the filet before cooking.

My FIL freezes fish in water and they keep for a fairly long time.He had some Salmon frozen like that for a year,I took it,thawed it out and not a speck of freezer burn,good color,texture was good/not mushy.

I have only froze them a couple of times and they were about 2 months old before I used them. IMO, there is such a big difference in the taste that now on the rare occasion that I do keep one, I make sure the family eats the whole thing within 4 days. The last time I did have one froze I made a very lite french chowder out of it. It tasted great. There is a recipe on the boards here for a fish chowder that looks real good. If you don't what to do that, just make sure you defrost it slowly, preferably in the fridge, then cook it as you like. Just my $.02

it's not like striped bass is that flavorful a fish anyway...

I freeze fish in ziplocks filled with water(not all the way). Never gets freezer burn... ever... Put it a big bowl of water to thaw. It it doesn't take that long. My grandpa use to do this and keep fish for a several months. Works for me

If your going to freeze bass get a vacum sealer. Frozen for a week or 12 months will not make a difference.

I'll add my name to the recommendation for the Food saver vacuum sealer. Worth every penny, when you can eat "fresh" fish in February that was caught in June.

I have one of those expensive FoodSaver vacuum sealers, and I tell you-- I wind up using this cheap Reynolds Handi-Vac with the special Ziploc-type bags way more often.
The way I wrap up the fish is with Glad Press n Seal freezer wrap, which you can get pretty tight around any shaped cut, then throw the pieces in the vacuum bag and seal them up.
I'd say a year easily.

Arty it is actually 2 years according to my foodsaver manual. Best purchase I ever made.

Actually TBD, that's a good point. I do plan on releasing. But I see next year as a time that I'll literally be putting more food on the table than in the past. The fish i do keep should help out the budget significantly...and let me fish more (in theory).

release what you cant eat fresh. no worries about freezing/keeping bass fresh and do your part in helping the bass population all in one shot.

I have never frozen fish. I make sure that when I decide to keep a fish, I make sure it is eaten within 24 hours. Usually I catch at night/early am, right into a cooler with ice, into the refrigerator when I get home, filleted during my lunch hour the next day and on the grill or in the oven at 6pm.
I usually invite someone from my family or friends for dinner that night or I send a dish over to my neighbors as soon as the fish is finished cooking. No leftovers.
I usually only keep one a month, once in a while two.
I don't own a food saver gizmo or maybe I would think differently about fish. We eat fish at least a couple times a week and we always go to the market on the day we are going to eat it to buy it.
Quick story, where my family is from in a fishing village in Sicily, if the fish is not purchased directly off of the boat as soon as it comes in, it is looked down upon as not being fresh. My family gets inside information on when the boats will come in sometimes in the wee hours of the morning and we go to the docks. Many times, I have seen fights break out on the docks because everyone wants the freshest fish possible.
I don't know how both my parents raised and born in a port town in Sicily and my dad had absolutely no interest in fishing.
