Kind of an oxymoronic question but I would like to know the best way to take one home. Thanks.

A good stiff shot of 151 proof rum in the gills, she will die with a smile.

Signature? I don't need no stinking signature.

The most humane way is to let it go, it'll die eventually.

insult it until it no longer wants to live..
"you fat stupid fish, blind bastard cant even see my leader, your mother was a cow"

actually ona mroe serious note i think putting it in an ice bath will just slow it down till all systems shut down.. personally i hate it when the only otion is to let it flop around until it craoks, much better to put it on ice

A big stick....a really big stick to the head, between the eyes.
or club
or a rock
or
You can also cut the??? I guess it is called the neck (Bottom side of the fish the fragile looking connection that joins the body to the underside of the head). The fish will bleed out pretty quick doing this.

you could do like the tuna guys and rake (cut?) the gill plates.. personally i dont like that idea, i dont really want to start cutting the fish until its passed on.. i hate cleaning a fish and seeing is gills pumping after youve removed both fillets, for me that just wrong.. some species like tuna it is necesary to bleed it so the meat doesnt get pumped full o nastyness from the fish stressing as it suffocates..

It has been proven that an ice bath is the most humane way. When a fish is submerst in water at a temp of 35-40F. The ice water actually causes cardiac arrest instantly. This method or using a chemical called MS-222 are the only humane ways to euthanize a fish according to the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
What do I do? Usually just rip the gills out, bleed the fish then preserve on ice. Makes the meat really gooooood.

I slit the gills and let it bleed out. It really improves the filet. No red line, or not much of one.

make sure you have a GOOD stick.
and you're not looking around and the only thing you can find is a wimpy one when ya get there.
like maybe someone calls you and says... one of the guys is here from the east coast, keep the next one you catch for him.
and you're mainly a C&R kinda person and have nothing to actually hit the fish with to kill it quickly, and you end up standing over the fish pounding on its head with a wimpy stick yelling DIE DAMMIT DIIIIIIIEEEEEEE! and the couple behind you watching the sunset gets up and leaves suddenly, keeping one eye on you the whole time.
usually it's a gill slit for me. and bury it.

Ack. Foo.
I want to die from a good old fashioned case of living.

Humane?
Does the thought cross your mind when you rig live bait?
I used to hate rigging live frogs for Largemouths - then I saw the results!

Rephrase the question to : "whats the best way to preserve your kill?"
Sorry if that offends - but we're human and that shouldn't offend.
If you are going to eat it - (thats why you kill it in the first place).
I like Ice. Its all about keeping it fresh.
If no ice - wet burlap bag will keep it cool for a while. Or - slit the gills and bleed em out in clear water ASAP, then change the water.
If no bucket - bleed em out on a stringer in the water. This will make all the "little critters" in the sea happy.

.357 JHP between the eyes. .41 AE will do, in a pinch. Of course, if the fish is bigger then a flounder, then you need a bigger load.

If I keep a fish, I stick my spare fillet knife down and into the back of the head (like ya'd pith a frog in lab ) , then a swift cut down to make sure the spinal chord is cut. Takes about 5-10 seconds total and its over. I am a woose and can't stand watching a fish flop around for an hour.

Seriously my mom likes to make fishckaes out of bluefish. I take my serated pocket knife and slice the point on the throat where the gills join. Then snap the head back while pointing the fish overboard to avoid all the blood that comes shooting out. Fish dies instantly and you never tasted better bluefish meat.
I like to then smotherer them on ice.

Cut the gills and bleed it; best overall for the meat and about as quick as you can git'r'done
