I mostly practice catch and release but I occasionally would like to keep a striper to eat. I always keep a fish bleeding from the gills. The problem is that I am almost always fishing so late at night by the time Im done the last thing I want to do is clean and filet a fish. I know its lazy but its true.

Question: Is it unwise to just throw the uncleaned fish in the fridge till the morning? Does the blood spoil that quick? I just dont want it to taste off if Im gonna bother taking a nice fish.

I would bleed it if I wasn't going to clean it for while.

I think I would want the guts out of there at least. It would take just a minute if you had cut the throat to bleed it anyway.

I do this all the time. Bleed it, gut it, put it in a trash bag and throw it in the fridge.

Bleed it and gut it right there on the beach. Can be done in a minute.

I would say no way, but how about this: Its August and 92 degrees outside. You go on a PB at 7pm you catch your first fish at 8, you dont get back till the dock till 2 am. Thats 7 hours your fish was in a sack on the floor, not bled, no ice. So if it in your fridge for 6-8 hours I would say your fine !

Cut off the tail, and hang it by the gillplate while it's still alive.
The heart pumps, the blood spurts from the back.
This is while you're fishing.
When you're ready to leave, one slice from the vent to the throat, and pull out the guts.

That wasn't hard, was it?

It would be nice if you packed the body cavity with crushed ice, and refrigerated it ASAP.

You haven't tasted fresh until you bring the barbie to the beach!

Takes all of about 5 seconds to gut a fish. I would do at least that much.

Don't worry about it. The fish won't spoil. Ever been on a trawler? Fish spend 3-4 days in a hold sitting on ice.

BTW--it's illegal to cut off any part of a bass. It's considered "mutilation" and it doesn't matter if what's left of the fish is over 28". All you can legally do before you get it home is gut it.

The fish will be fine if you put it in the fridge over night.

I've done this many of times. I generally put it in a plastic garbage bag and toss the whole fish in the fridge. It will be fine, No need to do anything.

Some would, I wouldn't refridge with guts and all. But that's me.

Hey, you're the one that's going to eat it, right? So if you're ok with it, than just do it.

Call me sissy, what you advised makes me really upset , I honestly cannot do that... Its ok for me to throat the fish while alive, but not with tail cut while its alive...
