Just put on MA plates on my car and was wondering if I have to return the NJ plates. Not familiar with NJ laws even though I lived in Freehold for a year. Thanks.

I was just going to ask the same question. We have thre sets to send back. I'm not going to drive them down. Of course we seem to have lost one . It will go with our collection from all the states I have had the autos registered. A friend from NY had abench warrant on her from not turning hers in. Cost a few hundred to get out of that mess.

You should send them back.

If you have plates that are not in use you must surrender them to MVC for cancellation.
To surrender plates

  • Visit any MVC Agency or Regional Service Center
  • Send by mail to:
    Motor Vehicle Commission
    Customer Advocacy Office
    P.O. Box 403
    Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0403
  • Effective July 31, 2006 license plates can no longer be surrendered at Inspection Stations
You will receive a receipt once you surrender your plates that you will need to save. This will serve as proof that they were surrendered in the event that charges are wrongfully acquired on them. See tickets on plates that are no longer yours for more information.

How would you like the NJ MVC to notify the Mass registry. Thee is nothing on this earth worse than a run in with the Massachusetts Registry jk
Do they still have their own police force?

Went to see the whatfixer.

No they don't. Under Governor Bill Weld, the MDC and Registry Police were absorbed into the State Police. Probably a good idea, at least it saved on administrative costs.

Techincally, your NJ plates are rented from the MVC, and your registration fees are exactly that, rent.

In the past, I've never returned plates and never once had an issue... but you are technically supposed to return them.

I have a "vanity" plate that I bought. Or am I just paying to use the saying?

About 2 or 3 years ago they started requiring insurance companies to notify them when a persons policy was cancelled, and if the car was still registered, they would suspend the persons license. NY had been doing something similar for about 10 years and NJ finally caught up.

Anyway, that's why now it's a good idea to just return them. You can always prove that you've moved out of state and re registered and insured the car, but is it worth the hassle when you could just return the plate (or one plate) and be done with it?

Thanks a million guys! Especially you Kings over Queens for the info.

Guess I'll be returning the plates. Wish I could keep them. I got the "lighthouse" vanity plates. They are rather pretty.

PS: I MISS WHITE CASTLE!!!!!!

Wish I did lose one of them. LOL

I just sent both plates back to Joisey. Cost me $4.80 for shipping.

Thanks again Joisey guys. Slide down a few White Castles for me, ok?
