Right behind the gill plate.
You want to shoot a fish there and intersect with the spine. A clean shot will shut the fish down almost instantly.
That is a very nice shot on a great fish

I would be scared to shoot that thing with a spear. It might turn around and eat me.

I'm not trying to criticize and belittle, or pass judgment, but where's the sport in a quick kill? Or is it in the hunt and getting close enough for the shot?

it's teh hunt. do you enjoy only when you hook into a nice fish and reel him in, or do you enjoy scouting the spots, preparing all your gear, checking the time and tides and conditions, matching the hatch, making hte perfect cast into the structure and properly working the plug to get that strike?

I don't know if this guy was a commercial fisherman or not, but has this issue been discussed? I know a commercial spear fisherman who's out every day his RI license allows (every day except Fridays and Saturdays). He has a 5 fish per boat daily limit. Most of the time, he (and his partners) come back to the dock with their limit, mostly 20 to 30 pounders, and I've seen them bring in some real cows at 50 - 60 pounds.

Is there a concern among the recreational fishermen that a commercial spearfisher may be depleting the breeding stock by taking so many large stripers? I know it concerns me.
