Best lures for surf fishing around Sanat Cruz

I'm new to Northern California (originally from So. Calif). I'm interested in learning how to surf fish here, but can't decide on what type of lures I should use in the surf around Santa Cruz or Davenport. Can any of you give me some pointers. BTW, I just ordered a VS250 and St. Croix 10'6" rod so I have the equipment to use. I just need to buy the lures now...

For stripers, a lot of guys fish the monterey bay beaches w/ pencil poppers, hopkins spoons, kastmasters, and swim baits. Halibut like spoons, plastics, & swim baits. You'll loose a lot of lures working the rocks for cabezon & rock fish but it can be done around Davenport & northern SC. Most guys will throw bait for them which is usually squid, anchovies, or shrimp.
Barred surf perch will be taking 1.5-2" grubs & gulp pile worms.
That's it in a nutshell. What brands, colors, rigs, techniques, and spots are you to discover. Good luck and update us on your success.

Welcome to SOL. Where did you move from?

Move from San Diego to Silly Valley. There's more money here (in Hi tech), but less fish. I used to drive down to Ensenada Mexico to do some off shore and surf fishing, but the drug dealers have made it too dangerous.

Thanks for the information. I have a question though:
How much of a weight should I use and what size hook?
