When it comes to striper fishing, i'm about as green as it gets. Anyway, there's this guy i see sometimes at one of my spots who really seems to know what he's doing. He is always using clams for bait. Just curious as to whether thats considered good striper bait as i don't see it mentioned much here on the boards

You bet! Clams can be used more or less year-round for striped bass here in the northeast. I've found them to be more effective in the Spring, and I find myself switching to bunker chunks predominantly in the Fall. Clams can catch an assortment of fish, not just stripers though.
If you're tempted to try clams as bait, get fresh clams if at all possible. Coming in second place would be salted clams. Avoid simply frozen clams like the bubonic plague; they have the consistency of oatmeal once defrosted and won't stay on the hook well.

It takes a big man to cry. It takes an even bigger man to laugh at him.

Years ago, we used clam bellies, and chummed with cut up clams.

They do, but it's got to be the lamest way to catch this gamefish...even worse than the dreaded sandworm.

How can a clam catch a striper?

They gang up on 'em in the shallows. 17 or 18 of them grab the tail and weight 'em down until the crabs can catch up.

Foxy-Seeiously...Clams are year 'round fodder for stripers.

Yes clams catch fish or more like fishermen that use clams as bait catch. You will catch a wide variety of fish with clams.

Yes they do. Depends on whether the clammers are running or not.

I have always heard they do but never have.... Have caught other fish on them though..... Its kinda like the liver of freshwater fishing will catch just about anything else but what you where originally aiming for...... Still i try using them as sometimes thats all I can get a hold of and its cheap... But I am "green" to this type of fishing thats why I signed up on this forum.......
